So just go to dream host or Google it, find it, check it out, and it's a great way to improve your low time. Welcome to another episode of Marketing School. I'm Eric Sue and I'm Neil Patel, and today we are going to talk about how to go from total newbie to SEO expert in record time. All Right, I love record time sounds just psych. The faster you can get there, the better. Eric and I have talked about this a little bit in the past, but when a lot of people want to learn SEO. They're just like, all right, I need to get a client so I can learn, or I need to watch some videos I can learn, or I need to read Eric's blog or Neil's blog or MOBS or Search Engine Journal or any of these blogs. None of those approaches are raw. Even going to conferences, that's not necessarily a wrong approach, but you're not gonna learn how to be an SEO expert in record time unless you're practicing on your own website. The quickest way is pop up a WordPress site. If you don't know how to do that, go to wpbgtner dot com and Sayed will teach you how to start a word press blog. It's really simply has a step by subtatorial get it up and running, and then from there you can read the blogs, watch the videos, go to the events, but implement everything you're learning on your own website. You don't really need to do the in person stuff more so just go online, get the tactics editorials, and just start testing an implementing it, and then you'll see, oh I made this change, This did this for me and it grew my traffic. Oh I made this change, it tanked my rankings and it didn't do well. Oh I made this change. Nothing happened after thirty days of making that change. By just experimenting and trying out, you'll figure out what's working and what's not. Now, that doesn't mean you're going to be an SEO expert right away, and you're gonna have to do SEO really well on all types of sites because every set has their own problem. But you're going to pick up the skills the fastest by doing and start off with your own website, and then once you get good, you can do it on other people's websites. Yeah. I'm just going to share a couple of stories. And back when I first started learning SEO, I basically built a couple of worpress websites. And back in the day, I used to go to a lot of music festivals. This is when I was like twenty three or so. I really like the light shows at the music festivals. Right, So I was like, Man, I'm going to make a website and that's going to be called light show videos dot com. I was like, oh my god, the exact match domain is available. I'm gonna be able to get it right. And then my friend was trying to just make me feel better. She's like, I think it's going to be big. I was like, yeah, I think it's going to be big too. So what happened was I made a lot of the mistakes. I think this is the key. My biggest mistake was I was targeting one keyword and trying to build the entire quote unquote business around it. You don't want to do that. In fact, what you want to do is you want to focus on who your potential customers are and serve a broader audience instead of just saying light show videos. And then for me, I just took other people's content. I just reposted it and I hired writers for five to ten dollars an article, and then I would basically get those articles written and then I would do great hat stuff where I would spin the article, and then I got my number one ranking. I learned how to get a number one ranking. But I learned from that experience that you can't just focus something on a keyword that has low volume and you kind of put an entire business around one keyword, right, So that was a big lesson that I learned. And then I tried to build another website called how to get rid of pimples dot net, and I was focusing on a keyword again, and I learned from that one where I basically had a lot of low quality articles, I had crappy designs. I tried to go cheap. My traffic shot up to like ten thousand visitors a day, which is great for like a beginner. Right, I was like, oh my god, I made it. Google algorithm hit me in a day, slapped my site down. And so from that I learn another thing. Right, So the Neil's point, you have to take a licking because it doesn't matter what Neil and I teach you here or whatever you read. If you don't learn and you get closer to experience yourself, you're not going to be able to get good. And then the other thing that Eric mentioned that I want you guys to all pay attention to is he did how to get rid of pimples on net and then he also did my show videos. He had cyword rich domain names. Right now, you want to focus on branding, So when you're doing SEO and you're trying out your own website, don't pick a cubed rich domain name like Eric now has single grain clickflow clickflow doesn't have too many keywords, and they're like, yeah, there's click, but that's not really a keyword that he's going after. And nor is single grain. Right, a lot of people think single ran is related to multwiker or something like that. You're telling me whiskey. There you go. The point I'm trying to make is keyword rich domain names aren't good for branding. When you want a credit card, you don't go to credit cards dot com, or when you want a car, you don't go to cars dot com. You're like, I want to AMEX, I want a MasterCard, I want to Visa, I want to range overrom BMW, I want Toyota, whatever may be. Brands is the key, right, So make sure when you're doing the SEO on your own website, don't just shove in a cword in your domain name. Try to build a brand. And by the way, the final thing I'll add is from those experiences, I actually built another website called Portal two walkthrough dot com, which is a game, and traffic spiked up for that one too. I think it's like sixty thousand visits a day. But the key thing is this, after those three experiences, I was able to leverage me as a newbie. I think in like six months, I was able to get a full time job doing SEO. And six months after that, I became an SEO strategist for a company that gets like hundreds of millions of visits right per year. And I went again knew Bee, knowing nothing, but I knew way more than other people because I actually tested these things on my own site. So sometimes you just need to know a little more than other people to become an SEO expert. By definition, that's what an expert is. And I got better and better over time, and I was able to leverage that on sites and I learned how to do things that were kind of gray hat. I converted them into a white hat way. That's another key thing to learn learn from the black cats. And then Neil I have talked about this in the past. Convert it into white hat way and you're gonna build even more leverage that way. That is it for to go to Marketingschool dot ioslash school. If you want to get in on the waiting list for the education program that Neil and I are putting together. We will see you tomorrow.
