STORY 1:  Suspect Arrested in Marietta Murder

An Atlanta man, Tavion Taylor, 21, was arrested and charged with the murder of De’shaune Hall, 21, in a Friday night shooting in Marietta. Taylor faces charges of felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during a crime. The shooting occurred around 10:15 p.m. outside an apartment building on Bentley Road near Interstate 75. Responding officers found Hall with multiple gunshot wounds, but he later died despite aid efforts. Witness statements led detectives to identify Taylor as the suspect. After a brief foot chase, Taylor was arrested at his Cumberland apartment by Cobb County officers early Saturday morning. Police from Marietta and Cobb County collaborated effectively, securing warrants for searches of both Hall's and Taylor's residences.

STORY 2:     Campbell High Receives $50K Donation for Music Technology Program

Campbell High School in Smyrna received a $50,000 donation to create a music technology program, thanks to a partnership between the Give a Note Foundation and Huber Engineered Material. The donation was presented during a morning assembly attended by Cobb Superintendent Chris Ragsdale, who praised the opportunity for students to engage in music technology. The program will teach students to use production equipment typically found in music studios. Already popular, 176 students have enrolled, and additional equipment donations have been provided. The event featured performances by the school's marching band and a surprise appearance by The BoyKinz. This initiative is part of a three-year investment by Give a Note, aiming to enhance music education in schools nationwide. Campbell is one of two high schools benefiting from this program, alongside Woodburn High School in Oregon.

STORY 3:  Pedestrian Killed Crossing Mableton Parkway

A 36-year-old man was struck and killed by a car while crossing Mableton Parkway near Community Drive in Mableton on Saturday night. The incident occurred around 10:49 p.m., and the pedestrian was not using a crosswalk. A white 2020 Nissan Murano was the vehicle involved in the accident, and the driver stopped following the collision. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by the Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office. Authorities have not yet released the pedestrian's identity as they await family notification. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact Cobb Police at 770-499-3987.

STORY 4:  Georgia Kicking Off Annual National Child Passenger Safety Week

The Governor's Office of Highway Safety, in collaboration with the Georgia Department of Public Health, is promoting child passenger safety during National Child Passenger Safety Week from September 15-21. The campaign aims to educate parents and caregivers about the correct installation and use of car seats and booster seats to prevent child fatalities in car crashes. Educational events across Georgia will provide guidance on choosing the right seat based on a child’s age, height, and weight, and ensure seats are registered for recall notifications. Properly installed car seats significantly reduce injury risks, and parents are encouraged to attend these events or visit fitting stations to ensure their children's safety. The initiative emphasizes compliance with Georgia state laws requiring appropriate restraints for children under eight and highlights the critical role of car seats in saving lives.

STORY 5:  Georgia abortion ban comes under fire at Senate hearing

An Atlanta woman, Mackenzie Kulik, testified before a U.S. Senate subcommittee about her experience with Georgia's restrictive abortion law, which bans most abortions after six weeks. Kulik, facing a dangerous pregnancy, was advised to rest and hydrate, as her case didn't qualify for exceptions under the law. The hearing, led by Sen. Jon Ossoff, highlighted the law's risks to women's health and its impact on the availability of OB-GYNs in Georgia. Dr. Carrie Cwiak criticized the law for increasing maternal mortality and forcing healthcare providers to turn away patients. The hearing underscored the broader political debate on abortion, with ongoing calls for federal legislation to protect abortion rights, contrasting with arguments for state-level decision-making.

STORY 6:  IRS-CI Atlanta Field Office Reminds Sports Fans Illegal Gambling is Criminal Offense

As the 2024-2025 NFL season kicks off, the IRS Criminal Investigation Atlanta Field Office is cautioning sports fans about the legal risks of illegal gambling, which generates over $700 million annually in the U.S. From 2020 to mid-2024, the IRS-CI launched 151 investigations into illegal gambling, leading to 71 convictions with average sentences exceeding two years. Illegal gambling funds criminal activities, and despite legalized sports betting in many states, it remains prohibited in Georgia and Alabama. A notable case involved a multi-million dollar tax evasion scheme in Alabama. Participants must report gambling winnings on tax returns, with the IRS urging individuals to maintain detailed records of their gambling activities.

STORY 7:    Wellstar Kicks off Student Internship Program with Cobb School District

More than 20 students from the Cobb Innovation and Technology Academy (CITA) have begun internships at Wellstar Health Center, as part of a healthcare career preparation program in collaboration with the Cobb School District. This initiative aims to equip high school students with essential skills for future careers in healthcare. The internship, running until December 31, offers three study areas: work-based learning, patient-care technicians, and certified nursing assistants. Students will gain hands-on experience, rotating through various departments, enhancing their skills and career prospects. Wellstar guarantees job offers to program graduates and covers costs for further healthcare education, addressing workforce shortages while eliminating financial barriers for students.
