NFL Assistant Jerry Mack Named New Kennesaw State Football Coach

Jerry Mack, a veteran collegiate coach with 20 years of experience and five conference championships, has been named Kennesaw State’s second football coach. At 44, Mack transitions from the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars, where he was the running backs coach, following three years at Tennessee. This is his second head-coaching stint, having led North Carolina Central to three straight MEAC championships and a Celebration Bowl appearance.

Mack’s coaching career spans roles at Rice, South Alabama, and Memphis, with a record of building high-performing offenses. Excited for the potential at Kennesaw, Mack aims to lead the team to success. His formal introduction will be streamed live on KSUOwls.com.

Based in Marietta, the organization offers essential services like emergency shelter, legal advocacy, and counseling for domestic violence and sexual assault survivors. Each year, 15 women leaders are recognized for their exceptional contributions to their professions, volunteer work, and the community. The 2025 honorees were chosen through a competitive process and will join the prestigious Academy of Women Leaders. The awards gala will take place on March 21 at the Atlanta Marriott Northwest, featuring a reception, dinner, auctions, and more, with one honoree being named Woman of the Year. This ambitious project, born from a $1 million investment by Cobb County, aims to improve river access and foster economic development, community connection, and environmental preservation. Over $43 million has been secured for the RiverLands in Cobb, including $25 million in public funding. Future plans include extending the trail to Mableton Parkway by 2026 as part of a decades-long effort to complete the entire network, transforming the region with expanded green space and recreational opportunities.

STORY 6:47-Home Midway Road Subdivision Proposed

The Cobb Planning Commission will review Poston Properties' proposal for a 47-home subdivision on Midway Road near Lost Mountain Park. The plan features traditional and craftsman-style homes with at least 2,200 square feet and two-car garages. The developer seeks open space community zoning, which would preserve 50% of the 48.67-acre property as permanently protected open space, including walking trails and park areas. A mandatory HOA and a 100-foot buffer from the neighboring Broadlands subdivision are also proposed. Previously delayed in October, the plan aims to balance development with conservation while enhancing the community.

STORY 7:UPDATE: Man Killed in Smyrna Hit-and-Run

Cobb County Police are investigating a hit-and-run incident in Smyrna that killed 30-year-old Jose Ortega-Dominguez early Saturday morning. Around 4:30 a.m., Ortega-Dominguez was struck by a westbound vehicle while walking outside a marked crosswalk on Pat Mell Road, near Green Acres Elementary School. The driver fled the scene without stopping. Ortega-Dominguez was pronounced dead at the scene, and his family has been notified. Authorities are seeking public assistance and urge anyone with information to call 770-499-3987.

Mother Charged After Baby Nearly Drowns in Bathtub

Tierra Diane Perkins, 27, from Powder Springs, was arrested after her 10-month-old daughter nearly drowned on October 25. Perkins reportedly left her infant twins alone in a bathtub while she cleaned another room. She was alerted by one of her other children and returned to find one twin with her head submerged and skin turning purple. The child received CPR and was hospitalized for further treatment. Perkins was charged with second-degree cruelty to children and arrested on November 12. She is being held without bond at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center.

She was alerted by one of her other children and returned to find one twin with her head submerged and skin turning purple. The child received CPR and was hospitalized for further treatment. Perkins was charged with second-degree cruelty to children and arrested on November 12. She is being held without bond at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center.

STORY 1:  Police: Mother to be Charged in Newborn's Death in Marietta

A 17-year-old mother, Leticia Rodriguez, is facing criminal charges after being found digging a grave for her deceased, mutilated newborn in Marietta. Police discovered the baby's body wrapped in a blanket and placed in a plastic bag. It's unclear if the baby was born alive or stillborn, with the cause of death under investigation by the Cobb County Medical Examiner. Rodriguez's uncle alerted police, and the family has been cooperative despite language barriers. Rodriguez, who had no assistance during childbirth, faces charges of concealing a death, abuse, and abandoning a dead body, with more charges possible. 

STORY 2:  Man Receives Life for Killing Mableton Woman

Hugho Pacheco, 52, pleaded guilty to malice murder and aggravated sexual battery for killing Yuridiana Villalobos, 58, in her Mableton home. He was sentenced to life in prison. On April 25, 2023, Villalobos' daughters witnessed Pacheco, her boyfriend, standing over her after a gunshot. He fled the scene, attempting to leave the country, but was arrested in Texas by U.S. Marshals. One daughter revealed Pacheco had been sexually abusing her. Cobb District Attorney Flynn Broady Jr. praised the children's bravery and law enforcement's swift action, ensuring Pacheco will never harm again. 



STORY 3:   The Fielding Lewis Chapter Honors “The Poppy Lady”

 The Fielding Lewis Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution donated copies of "The Poppy Lady" by Barbara Elizabeth Walsh to Marietta's elementary schools. The book tells the story of Moina Bell Michael, a Georgia woman who popularized the red poppy as a tribute to veterans after World War I. Vice Regent Melissa Tanner and librarian Julie Cone presented the books to eight schools, where they were received by the media specialists. The red poppy is now globally recognized as a symbol of remembrance for service members.

The State Road and Tollway Authority is launching an enhanced customer service experience for Peach Pass users, featuring a revamped website and mobile app starting Dec. 17. This upgrade requires migrating all existing accounts, temporarily suspending access to account information from Dec. 12-16. Customers should update payment details by Dec. 11 and note that toll processing may be delayed. The new Peach Pass Go! Mobile App will focus on account services, while the Peach Pass Verify app will handle carpool registrations for toll-free I-85 Express Lane trips. Users should update their contact info and prepare for the transition.
