STORY 1: KSU Community Mourns Slain Student

Nicki Davis-Cosby, a lecturer at Kennesaw State University (KSU), mourns the loss of Alasia Franklin, a student who was fatally shot outside the Austin Residence Complex on KSU's Kennesaw campus. Davis-Cosby emphasizes the importance of supporting students and promoting safety on campus. KSU identified the suspect as Samuel Harris, and the shooting is under investigation. The incident prompted a campus lockdown and raised concerns among students like Deon Brown, who live nearby. Harris was apprehended and faces charges including murder and aggravated assault. A memorial for Franklin includes heartfelt tributes, highlighting the campus's mourning amid its usual activities. KSU offers counseling resources for affected students, recognizing the emotional toll of the tragedy.

STORY 2: Tree Worker Electrocuted in Acworth Dies

In Acworth, an employee from a tree service company tragically died from electrocution while cutting down trees. Acworth Police responded to the incident on Academy Street. The victim's identity was not disclosed. The area was cordoned off, and streets around the scene were closed. The incident underscores the dangers associated with tree-cutting work. Investigations are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

STORY 3: Cobb Police Fatally Shoot Man Driving Stolen Truck

In Mableton, Cobb County Police fatally shot 40-year-old Clifford Jacoby Beck from Griffin, Georgia, after he attempted to flee in a stolen truck. Police boxed in the truck at a gas station, where a passenger exited but Beck tried to escape, ramming into police cars. Officers fired shots, hitting Beck. The truck caught fire, and Beck was pulled out and taken to a hospital, where he later died. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into the incident.

STORY 4: Former Cobb Congressman Barr Elected NRA President

Former Cobb County congressman Bob Barr has been elected as the new president of the National Rifle Association, succeeding Charles Cotton. Barr, who previously served as a U.S. Attorney and was the 2008 presidential candidate for the Libertarian party, took office at the 2024 NRA convention in Dallas. His election comes amid increased turmoil for the NRA, including the resignation of former CEO Wayne LaPierre amidst allegations of corruption. Barr's term will last until next spring, with the possibility of serving a second term. His election follows a speech by former President Donald Trump at the convention, where he received an endorsement from the NRA.

STORY 5: Former Gov. Barnes Offers New Proposal for 114 Homes in South Cobb

Former Gov. Roy Barnes is seeking a settlement with Cobb County over zoning litigation to develop a subdivision on his farmland in Powder Springs. Initially denying a rezoning request for 114 homes, Barnes filed lawsuits alleging exclusionary zoning. The proposed settlement revises the plan to include 114 homes on 65 acres, with the rest as open space. Flood concerns from nearby residents persist, fearing increased flooding with densely packed houses. Barnes' attorney argues the plan addresses stormwater impacts. Residents prefer a more balanced approach like a recent 180-home proposal. The county will discuss the settlement at a zoning hearing.
