Metro volunteers help those stranded in heat find relief at Cobb County cooling centers

Starting Monday, cooling centers will reopen to help residents escape the soaring temperatures. Over the weekend, volunteers like Bryant Plater from MUST Ministries have been out on the streets, offering water and juice and informing people about free bus rides to the cooling center.

Joseph Cook, owner of Cooks Heating and Air, shares how the heat wave has strained older air conditioning systems, leading to increased demand for his services. His team has been working late into the night to keep up with customer calls.

Cobb County has allocated $180,000 to keep the cooling center in Marietta open through September, which has significantly reduced heat-related emergency calls.

The MUST Ministries Cooling Center at 1297 Bells Ferry Road opens on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., providing meals and a cool space for those in need.

Bloody Machete and Fingerprint Found in Slain Woman's Apartment

New details have emerged surrounding the murder of Samantha Woolery. The 42-year-old surgery resident was discovered dead in her apartment last weekend. Police have charged her ex-husband, Mickey Woolery, with multiple crimes including murder. 

Surveillance footage captured Mickey Woolery leaving Samantha's apartment with blood on his hands, feet, and pants. Investigators later found a bloody machete and a fingerprint matching Mickey's right thumb at the scene. 

Marietta Police, working closely with Carmel, Indiana authorities, tracked Mickey to his home state where he attempted to flee but was apprehended. Samantha Woolery, remembered for her kindness and generosity, will be missed by many. A GoFundMe page started by her daughter has already raised over $47,000 for her funeral. Our thoughts are with her family during this difficult time.

In Marietta, Juneteenth celebrations highlighted both the historical emancipation of African-American slaves and the resilience of Black culture. At Jim Miller Park, the Wild Wild West in Color Rodeo and Agriculture Expo drew thousands, featuring Black cowboys, ranchers, and farmers. Attendees enjoyed Western attire, festive food, and locally grown produce while engaging with vendors and learning about modern farming technologies. The event showcased a rodeo with line dancing, horse riding, and reenactments of famous Black cowboys like Nat Love and Stage Coach Mary, emphasizing their contributions despite historical challenges. Organizers aimed to educate attendees, particularly youth, about agriculture and Black history, ensuring Juneteenth’s legacy endures through cultural celebration and education.

The Marietta Board of Education unanimously approved a new policy to restrict cellphone, smartwatch, and social media use among middle-grade students at Marietta Sixth Grade Academy and Marietta Middle School. Starting this fall, students will use special pouches to store their devices throughout the school day, with only staff having access to unlock them. The $100,000 initiative aims to enhance focus and reduce distractions, supported by research partnerships to evaluate its effectiveness. Concerns over implementation logistics were addressed, with assurances that disciplinary responsibilities would not burden teachers. The policy garnered broad support from community leaders and parents, emphasizing its potential to improve student concentration and overall well-being.

STORY 4: Smyrna Kroger Celebrates $1 Million Facelift 
In Smyrna, the Kroger store on South Cobb Drive celebrated a $1 million renovation aimed at enhancing customer experience. The upgrades included new sections like the Kitchen Place kitchenware department and improvements to the bakery, seafood, meat departments, and Murray’s Cheese Shop. The store also expanded its Starbucks area to accommodate more customers efficiently. STORY 5: Marietta School Board Curbs Students’ Cell phone Use 
The Marietta Board of Education unanimously approved a new policy to restrict cellphone, smartwatch, and social media use among middle-grade students at Marietta Sixth Grade Academy and Marietta Middle School. Starting this fall, students will use special pouches to store their devices throughout the school day, with only staff having access to unlock them. The $100,000 initiative aims to enhance focus and reduce distractions, supported by research partnerships to evaluate its effectiveness. Concerns over implementation logistics were addressed, with assurances that disciplinary responsibilities would not burden teachers. The policy garnered broad support from community leaders and parents, emphasizing its potential to improve student concentration and overall well-being.
