STORY 1:Kennesaw State Students Hold Second Protest for Palestinians Amid Nationwide Demonstrations

Kennesaw State University students conducted their second demonstration supporting Palestinian rights, amidst calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East and urging the university to divest from companies tied to Israel. This action is in coordination with the Party for Socialism and Liberation in Atlanta. Notably, the protests have adhered to peaceful standards, abiding by university guidelines for unregistered events. A significant march took place through the campus, with university police providing traffic control without direct intervention. The student organizers, while focusing current efforts on supporting their counterparts at Emory University facing arrest, hinted at possible encampments during KSU’s upcoming commencement. University officials are yet to comment. This protest is part of a larger wave of campus demonstrations across the country, calling for educational institutions to sever financial connections with Israeli-linked entities.

STORY 2:Man Gets Decade Behind Bars for Stalking West Cobb Woman

Michael Lydon Strong, 43, from Dallas, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for stalking his former girlfriend and her 13-year-old son in late 2020 in west Cobb. Already serving six years for selling cocaine, Strong was found guilty of aggravated stalking and disorderly conduct. The victim and her son had sought a restraining order against Strong due to his violent behavior. He violated the order by breaking into their home while they slept. The son called 911, and officers arrived while Strong was still inside. Strong's earliest release date is Oct. 12, 2030. Cobb District Attorney Flynn Broady Jr. emphasized the office's commitment to protecting domestic violence victims.

STORY 3:Smyrna Man Arrested for Murder

Bobby Pegues, 40, of Smyrna, was arrested for allegedly shooting and killing Travis Johnson, 48, in Marietta. Pegues faces charges including aggravated assault and murder. The incident occurred on Lorene Drive around 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Johnson later succumbed to his injuries at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. Pegues is held without bond at the county jail. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact Cobb County Police at 770-499-3945.

STORY 4:Annual GHC Youth Fishing Rodeo Returns This June

Georgia Highlands College will host its Annual GHC Youth Fishing Rodeo on June 1 at Paris Lake in Rome. The event, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., is free for children under 15. Parents can assist, but not fish. Prizes will be awarded for the heaviest fish in each age category. Other free activities will be available. Loaner gear will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Food will be available for purchase, along with a cash-only raffle. The lake will be stocked with fish prior to the event. Whataburger, a fast-food chain expanding in Cobb County, is eyeing a fifth location at the former O’Charley’s site in east Cobb. The proposed 7,000-square-foot building at Sandy Plains and Shallowford roads includes a two-lane drive-thru, which conflicts with land-use restrictions set in a 1999 settlement. These restrictions prohibit fast-food restaurants or drive-thru services. Whataburger's request for a site plan approval, not rezoning, will go before the Cobb Board of Commissioners on May 21. The chain already has two locations in Kennesaw and plans for another in Acworth, pending construction.

Police Identify 21-Year-Old Killed in Hit-and-Run Near Osborne High

In a tragic event early Saturday morning near Osborne High School, Marietta faced a somber moment as a young life was cut short. Cobb Police have confirmed the identity of the 21-year-old victim, Maria Perez Gonzalez, of Marietta, who was involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash on Austell Road.

The incident unfolded at approximately 5:30 a.m. when Gonzalez was crossing at a marked crosswalk. A white 2014 Ford Econoline, heading northbound, first struck Gonzalez with the driver's side mirror. The force of the impact projected her onto the roadway, where a following Chrysler, also traveling north, tragically struck her again. Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

The Chrysler driver, identified as 49-year-old Marietta resident John Anderson, was not injured and remained at the scene to cooperate with authorities. However, the driver of the Ford van fled the scene without stopping to render aid or contacting law enforcement.

Cobb Police's search for the Ford driver continues, with Officer Aaron Wilson urging anyone with information about the crash to come forward. Cobb Police is reaching out to the community for assistance at 770-499-3987.

STORY 1:Marietta Couple Indicted for Child Molestation

Brian Deshawn Phillips, 46, and Elizabeth Anne Cooley, 23, face charges including child cruelty and molestation, accused of assaulting an underage girl over two years at a Marietta hotel. Phillips is also accused of molesting other women in Cobb. The 27 charges include aggravated child molestation, trafficking persons for sexual servitude, and cruelty to children. Phillips allegedly assaulted underage girls at various Cobb locations and burglarized a woman's home for assault. Cooley is accused of aiding Phillips. Phillips faces additional charges of firearm possession and marijuana possession. He was convicted in Florida in 2003 for child fondling. Both are held without bond at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center since their January 30 arrests.

STORY 2:State Court Candidates Talk Tech, Character and Challenges

Candidates for Cobb County State Court post 7, including incumbent Carl Bowers and challengers Crystal Stevens McElrath and Matt McMaster, discussed the qualities of a good judge, the role of technology in the court system, and the benefits of electoral challenges at a forum. Bowers emphasized integrity and transparency, McElrath highlighted her ability to understand people, and McMaster emphasized empathy and self-awareness. They all agreed on the importance of technology in the justice system and expressed support for online hearings. McMaster stressed the value of challenging incumbents to bring about positive change, resonating with some voters seeking fresh perspectives.

More than 500 students attended the Marietta High School Junior-Senior Prom at the Hilton Marietta Conference Center, preceded by the traditional pre-prom group photos at Brumby Hall for seniors and Ivy Grove for juniors. Valeria Rodriguez, student body co-president, described the event as a last hurrah for the graduating class, emphasizing the unity and enjoyment shared by all attendees regardless of their social groups. Principal Marvin Crumbs praised the event as one of the best proms in the school's history, marking it as a smashing success.

STORY 6:'Happy Beyond Measure':  Disabled People Enjoy Day at Kennesaw Skate Park

Wheelchair users gathered at Swift-Cantrell Park in Kennesaw for an event hosted by Life Rolls On, offering adaptive skating opportunities. Clint Cook, executive director of Life Rolls On Atlanta, emphasized the organization's mission to empower people with disabilities to engage in activities like skating. Despite pandemic-related challenges, nearly 60 participants enjoyed the event, coming from various locations. Volunteers like Cody Appleton assisted participants, teaching adaptation and mobility skills. Skaters, including Jacob Lee, expressed excitement and determination to master new tricks. Caitlin Jones, a physical therapist, highlighted the joy of helping individuals exceed their expectations. Overall, the event promoted inclusivity and encouraged participants to actively engage in life despite disabilities.

STORY 7:Cobb County Water System Reports 250 Gallon Sewage Overflow

On April 26, the Cobb County Water System reported a wastewater sewer overflow of approximately 250 gallons at 3413 Belleford Court NE in Roswell. The overflow, caused by grease, discharged into a tributary leading to Sweat Mountain Creek. The Water System was notified at 12:20 p.m. and managed to stop the overflow by 2:25 p.m. Upon arrival, Water System employees observed sewage escaping from a secured manhole lid into the tributary. They used a jet machine to clear the sewer line and spread lime on the affected area. No fish kills were observed during their assessment. STORY 1: Marietta Couple Indicted for Child Molestation
Brian Deshawn Phillips, 46, and Elizabeth Anne Cooley, 23, face charges including child cruelty and molestation, accused of assaulting an underage girl over two years at a Marietta hotel. Phillips is also accused of molesting other women in Cobb. The 27 charges include aggravated child molestation, trafficking persons for sexual servitude, and cruelty to children. Phillips allegedly assaulted underage girls at various Cobb locations and burglarized a woman's home for assault. Cooley is accused of aiding Phillips. Phillips faces additional charges of firearm possession and marijuana possession. He was convicted in Florida in 2003 for child fondling. Both are held without bond at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center since their January 30 arrests.
STORY 2: State Court Candidates Talk Tech, Character and Challenges
Candidates for Cobb County State Court post 7, including incumbent Carl Bowers and challengers Crystal Stevens McElrath and Matt McMaster, discussed the qualities of a good judge, the role of technology in the court system, and the benefits of electoral challenges at a forum.
