STORY 1: Cobb Sheriff's Deputy Loses Finger in Alleged Drunk Driving Wreck

A Cobb sheriff's deputy lost a finger in a four-car crash allegedly caused by Cedric Jamarr Curne, 42, of Atlanta, who was driving drunk. Curne's Porsche rear-ended one car, causing a chain reaction. The deputy's hand was severely injured in the collision. Curne refused a breath sample and field sobriety tests but showed signs of intoxication. He claimed to have had one glass of wine hours before the crash. Curne faces charges including serious injury by vehicle and driving under the influence and has been released on bond.

STORY 2: Woman Escapes Carjacker at QuikTrip

Akeem Thrasher, 39, allegedly broke into a woman's car at a Smyrna gas station, causing her to fear for her life. The incident occurred around 3 a.m. at a QuikTrip on Windy Hill Road. Thrasher entered through the passenger door and stared at the woman disturbingly. She managed to escape, and Thrasher has been charged with hijacking a motor vehicle and criminal trespassing. Thrasher has a long criminal history dating back to 2008, including charges of robbery, aggravated assault, and strangulation. He is currently held in the Cobb jail without bond.

STORY 3: Cobb Chamber Email Address Hacked

Cobb Chamber CEO Sharon Mason notified members of a security breach where an email account of a staff member was compromised. Recipients were warned not to open an email with the subject line "Emily Walls shared 'Cobb Chamber Membership Campaign Program Payments..pdf' with you." They were instructed to delete it and check with their IT team if they had already opened it. Mason assured that the chamber's IT team resolved the issue and confirmed that future messages from chamber staff are safe to open. She clarified that the incident did not result in any data breach or security concerns and apologized for any confusion or concern caused.

STORY 4: Marietta Schools Says 'Yes I Can' to Honoring Special Students and Staff

Marietta City Schools held their second-annual MCS Yes I Can! Awards ceremony, honoring students with exceptionalities from all 12 schools in the district. A total of 28 students were recognized for embodying the principle of "Be Somebody." The event, held at the Marietta Performing Arts Center, aimed to celebrate the remarkable achievements of these students and raise awareness of their abilities. The awards are based on the national program by the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). Additionally, the ceremony recognized five employees and one community partner for their contributions to supporting students with disabilities. Performances by students from the Burruss Dance Team added to the event's festivities.

STORY 5: Marietta Looks to Beautify Polk Street Corner

Marietta Councilman Johnny Walker is proposing a partnership between the city, the Marietta Arts Council, dk Gallery, and Magnolia Garden Club to beautify a vacant lot at the corner of Polk Street and Mountain View Road. The lot, once vibrant with apple and peach trees and a variety of flowers, has become abandoned after the Weaver family, who lived there, passed away. Walker aims to revive the lot with art installations and seasonal flowers, restoring its former charm. The city has already cleared the overgrown weeds from the lot, and discussions about its transformation were scheduled for the Marietta City Council's Tuesday night committee meetings.
