Cobb Schools Community Delivers Holiday Cheer

Cobb Schools embraced the spirit of giving this holiday season, rallying staff, students, and community partners to bring joy to families across the district. Over 2,000 gifts, 1,000 coats, and 200 sets of colorful sheets were collected, ensuring families felt the holiday magic. Social workers played Santa’s helpers, delivering items to families, while students at Pearson Middle School helped sort donations. Cobb EMC donated 948 coats, and schools like Sedalia Park and others ensured toys reached children in need.

At Birney Elementary, Salesforce raised funds to provide every fifth-grader with gifts, a tradition started by teacher Amber Heath and her college friend, Brandon Douglas. The joy was evident as students opened their gifts, some even moved to tears. Pearson Middle School extended its support with Fresh Market and Pilot’s Hangar offering essentials during the break. Through heartfelt efforts, the Cobb community brought brighter, warmer holidays to countless families.

STORY 1: Soldier Reunited with Dog He Met While Deployed Overseas

Army Spc. Landon Gnade was reunited with his puppy, Lepo, thanks to the nonprofit Paws of War, after serving in Kosovo. Gnade met Lepo, originally named Onyx, during his deployment, and they quickly bonded. Paws of War, which helps veterans by reuniting them with animals they bonded with during service, facilitated Lepo's journey to the U.S. Despite challenges in transporting animals, the nonprofit successfully brought Lepo to Georgia, where he will live on Gnade's farm. Paws of War will cover Lepo's medical and insurance costs for life, supporting both the soldier and his pet.

STORY 2: Cobb Approves Indoor Soccer Facility in Mableton

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners approved a proposal for an indoor soccer facility on Lions Club Drive, requested by Trejo Soccer Academy. The facility, a 24,028-square-foot warehouse, will be rezoned for commercial indoor recreation, allowing the academy to expand with two indoor fields for youth and adult training. Initially met with opposition over parking and rezoning concerns, the proposal was approved with stipulations, including occupancy limits and a 40-foot buffer. The facility must be completed within 180 days, and the property cleaned up. The building, originally a roller rink, will be repurposed for soccer training.

STORY 3:  40-Home West Cobb Subdivision Approved

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners approved a subdivision on Midway Road, proposed by Poston Properties, with a 5-0 vote. The development will feature 40 traditional and craftsman-style homes, reduced from an initial 47, with sizes ranging from 2,200 to 2,800 square feet. The 48.67-acre property will include 20.93 acres of protected open space, walking trails, and park areas. A homeowners association will maintain common areas. A 100-foot buffer will separate the subdivision from neighbors, and development hours are restricted. The project aims to offer diverse housing sizes, addressing some affordable housing concerns.

In 2024, Cobb County saw significant political shifts and high-profile election events. Sonya Allen, a former deputy district attorney, unseated incumbent DA Flynn Broady in the Democratic primary, securing her position without Republican opposition. In Georgia House District 42, socialist Gabriel Sanchez defeated incumbent Teri Anulewicz, later winning the general election. Cobb was a battleground for the presidential race, hosting multiple visits from President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance, as well as Vice President Kamala Harris. Despite Cobb's Democratic lean, Trump won Georgia with 51% of the vote, highlighting the state's swing status.

County, Cities Meeting Wednesday to Talk New Tax Option

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners has scheduled a special meeting to discuss the implications of House Bill 581, a new property tax law approved by Georgia voters. HB581 introduces a statewide floating homestead exemption aimed at altering property tax systems, alongside an optional 1% Floating Local Option Sales Tax (FLOST). Local governments must decide by March 1 whether to opt-in or out of the exemption. Those opting out cannot impose a FLOST and must meet strict requirements, including public advertising, three public hearings, and passing a resolution before the deadline.

The meeting, set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at 100 Cherokee Street in Marietta, will bring together representatives from Cobb County and its municipalities to address these changes. Marietta Mayor Steve Tumlin confirmed city representation, and Commissioner Keli Gambrill stated all seven city leaders were invited to participate in this critical discussion on the county’s tax policy direction.

STORY 1:  Guthrie’s Opens in East Cobb 

Guthrie's has opened a new restaurant in east Cobb's Parkaire Landing, Marietta, marking its fifth location in Georgia this year. Known for its scratch-made chicken fingers and signature sauce, Guthrie's aims to blend its heritage with Marietta's evolving culture. The drive-thru operates daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., offering hand-breaded chicken fingers, cole slaw, fries, Texas toast, and their famous sauce. This new location will create about 35 jobs. Guthrie's, founded in Haleyville, Alabama, now has over 60 locations across 10 states, continuing its national expansion. 

STORY 2:     Cobb to Consider Mt. Bethel Christian Academy Expansion Plan 

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners will review Mt. Bethel Christian Academy's expansion master plan during a zoning hearing. The plan aims to replace temporary classrooms with permanent buildings and relocate sports facilities on its high school campus, which can accommodate up to 625 students. The academy, independent of Mt. Bethel Church, faces a lease termination for its lower and middle schools, necessitating new facilities by 2028. Proposed changes include new academic buildings, improved traffic access, and relocated sports facilities, sparking opposition from local residents concerned about disruption and lack of detailed plans. Commissioner JoAnn Birrell plans a campus walkthrough before the hearing. 

STORY 3:  'You Deserve It': Veteran Detainees Presented with Resources at Cobb Jail 

Cobb County Sheriff Deputy Nedra Handia discovered numerous resources for veterans, including the Cobb County Veterans Accountability and Treatment Court and The Warrior Alliance, after connecting with Vietnam veteran Daniel Hydrick. Inspired, she organized a program for six veteran detainees to learn about these resources. With support from Sheriff Craig Owens, changes were made in the Cobb Jail, including a special wing for veterans. Detainee Gary Williams, a Vietnam-era Air Force veteran, appreciated the support and plans to share the information. The program emphasized hope and freedom, with Hydrick encouraging the veterans that the best is yet to come.

STORY 4:  Christmas at Piedmont Brings Holiday Spirit to East Cobb 

Piedmont Church's annual Christmas at Piedmont celebration in East Cobb brought holiday cheer to thousands with a free, two-day event. The festivities included an arts and crafts fair with over 40 vendors, live dance performances, a petting zoo, and activities for kids like inflatable bounce houses and photos with Santa. Vendors like Two Crafty Ladies of Georgia and Samantha Raeburn offered unique gifts and experiences, such as handcrafted decorations and "blind date with a book" packages. The event, supported by sponsors, featured fair rides and food vendors, making it a festive tradition for local families. 

STORY 5:  No. 10: Cobb Schools Nixes $50 Million Event Center 

The Cobb County Board of Education canceled plans for a $50 million event center in July, following Superintendent Chris Ragsdale's recommendation due to economic concerns reminiscent of pre-2008 recession indicators. The board voted 6-0 to halt the project, initially approved in March 2023, which faced criticism for its cost and lack of detailed planning. Critics included board member Becky Sayler and the citizen group Watching the Funds — Cobb. Despite the cancellation, Ragsdale emphasized the ongoing need for such a facility but prioritized employee welfare over new infrastructure.

STORY 6:  'FedUp with FedEx': Residents Complain of Austell Delays 

Residents have nicknamed the FedEx facility on Factory Shoals Road the "Austell Black Hole" due to significant delays in package deliveries, with some waiting weeks. Marietta resident Topher Evans, frustrated by lost shipments, created a Facebook group highlighting these issues. The group has grown, with members sharing stories of delayed packages, including essential items like medication. Despite FedEx's statement about efforts to resolve delays, many customers remain dissatisfied, expressing their concerns on social media. Evans now avoids using FedEx for non-express shipments, citing ongoing unresolved issues at the Austell hub. 

STORY 7:    Ruby's Sourdough Pizza Opens in Smyrna 

Ruby’s Sourdough Pizza in Smyrna aims to create a community hub with its freshly-made sourdough pizzas and inviting dining space. Owner Chris Rimby designed the venue to host families and friends, featuring an outdoor patio, greenspace, and a stage for events. The menu includes red and white pies, with popular options like "The Roundabout" and the mushroom white pizza. The restaurant also offers a variety of drinks and is pet-friendly. Future plans include a coffee and ice cream bar, and a taco restaurant.
