STORY 1:  Two Rescued in Powder Springs Trench Collapse

Two workers were rescued after a trench collapse at a Powder Springs construction site on Wednesday. Cobb Fire crews responded around 4 p.m. to 5001 Hill Rd., where one worker had freed themselves, while the other remained trapped waist-deep. Specially-trained rescue teams used a concrete silo and shovels to free the second victim. Both individuals were transported to Kennestone Hospital in stable condition. The cause of the collapse is still under investigation.

STORY 2: Cobb Sheriff's Office Bloodhound Retires

After over five years of service, K-9 Shax, a seven-year-old bloodhound with the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office, retired in a heartfelt ceremony. Trained in tracking human odor, Shax began his career in 2019 and was instrumental in locating 16 individuals and assisting in 43 other cases across 119 deployments. Honored with treats, toys, a new bed, and a plaque, Shax was celebrated for his contributions to public safety. Now retired, he will live with his handler, Deputy Barry Bales, enjoying a well-deserved life of relaxation and care.

STORY 3:  Man Charged with Firing Gun While Drunk at Delk Road Hotel

James Edward Johnson, 27, of Atlanta, was arrested for firing four shots at another man while intoxicated during an altercation at The Courtyard Marriott in Marietta on March 8. The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. after Johnson intervened in a domestic dispute, engaged in a fistfight, and later retrieved a gun to confront the man again. A breath test confirmed alcohol in his system. Charged with discharging a weapon under the influence, Johnson was arrested at 5 a.m. and remains in custody on a $10,000 bond.

STORY 4: KSU Breaks Ground on $50 Million Dorm

Kennesaw State University broke ground on a $50 million residence hall, "Summit II," to address growing on-campus housing needs. The 97,000-square-foot facility will add 462 beds, primarily for freshmen, and is set to open by fall 2026. With nearly 48,000 students enrolled, KSU is Georgia's third-largest university, but on-campus housing remains limited, with fewer than 6,000 beds available. The project is part of KSU's master plan to add 1,500 beds across its campuses. Officials highlighted the benefits of on-campus living, including improved retention and community building, especially for first-year students.

STORY 5:  Cobb Inmate Charged with Battery of Deputy

 Christopher Brian McNeal, 34, of Marietta, faces multiple charges after allegedly assaulting a deputy at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center on March 12. During an insulin call, McNeal resisted being escorted, lunged at the deputy, and pulled him down, causing the deputy to fall and injure his knee. McNeal then mounted the deputy and attempted to strike him before being tased. He is charged with aggravated battery, obstruction, mutiny, and unlawful acts of violence in a penal institution. McNeal remains in custody without bond.

Kenya Latrice Smith, 48, of Powder Springs, is accused of pushing a woman out of a moving vehicle during an argument on March 8 in Marietta. According to police, Smith struck the victim while driving, and when the victim tried to exit, Smith pushed her out, causing severe injuries, including road rash, facial wounds, and permanent scarring. Smith was arrested shortly after and charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery. She remains in custody without bond.

STORY 2:    Smyrna to Close Portion of King Street Each Weekend

Starting this weekend, a portion of King Street in Smyrna will close to vehicle traffic from Fridays at 3 p.m. to Sundays at 6 p.m. until November. The Smyrna City Council approved the closure to enhance pedestrian safety around the popular downtown greenspace. Mayor Derek Norton emphasized the need to protect families enjoying the area, allowing easier access between the playground and greenspace. Barriers and potential bollards will be installed to enforce the closure, which may also benefit festivals. Town Center mall has paid off nearly $1 million in overdue 2024 property taxes, avoiding a tax deed auction that could have led to new ownership. STORY 4: Kennesaw Begins Construction on $13.9M Public Safety Building

Kennesaw officials broke ground on a $13.9 million public safety building on Moon Station Road, set to become the city’s new police headquarters. The 25,000-square-foot facility will consolidate all police operations, offering 40% more space and modern amenities like a crime lab, K-9 space, and emergency operations center. Funded by SPLOST, stormwater reserves, and the American Rescue Plan, the project has been in development for nine years. Corey Demetrius Jones of Griffin is accused of stealing $3,500 worth of equipment, including RAM cards, a security camera, hard drives, and a laptop, from Kennestone Hospital on Jan. 29. He faces charges of second-degree burglary and theft over $1,500, though he does not appear in jail records.

STORY 7: Cobb to Consider CITA Construction, Other School Renovations

The Cobb Board of Education will vote Thursday on contracts for constructing a second Cobb Innovation and Technology Academy at Allatoona High, set to open in 2026, and renovations at several schools. The new academy will offer 11 career pathways, including aviation and AI, funded by SPLOST VI. Renovation contracts include upgrades at five elementary schools, one middle school, and three high schools, with projects like flooring replacements and track resurfacing. The Atlanta Braves are enhancing the fan experience with the new Outfield Market, a 4,600-square-foot outdoor food court opening April 4 at Truist Park. Featuring eight stalls, it highlights local flavors like Mo’Bay Beignet Co., Popcorn Remix, NFA Burger, Pepper’s Hotdogs, Fred’s Meat & Bread, Coop’s Wings, Taqueria Tsunami, and Velvet Taco. The Giving Kitchen, a nonprofit supporting food service workers, will also host rotating chef features. With diverse offerings like gourmet hot dogs, smash burgers, Philly cheesesteaks, and fusion tacos, the market promises something for everyone. 

STORY 2: Severe Thunderstorms Expected Saturday Night with High Winds, Chance of Tornados 

Severe thunderstorms are expected in Cobb this weekend, with the National Weather Service warning of high winds, flooding, and potential tornadoes. The storm will peak overnight Saturday into Sunday, bringing 1-2 inches of rain, 60-80 mph winds, and possible strong tornadoes. Flash flooding and hail up to an inch are also risks. Severe weather is expected from 8 p.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday, with sunny skies and a high of 71°F by Sunday afternoon. Residents are urged to stay alert, have emergency notifications enabled, and know their safe shelter locations. 

STORY 3:  Cobb to Clean Up South Cobb Drive, Atlanta Road Intersection 

Cobb County Chairwoman Lisa Cupid is addressing litter and overgrowth at the South Cobb Drive and Atlanta Road intersection, calling it an "embarrassment." The Board of Commissioners approved $14,010 from Cupid’s contingency fund for a one-time cleanup by Cobb DOT, despite the area being a state-maintained route. Complaints about litter and overgrowth, partly attributed to heavy traffic and a nearby homeless population, prompted the action. Cobb DOT, which clears over 100 tons of trash annually, plans to complete the cleanup by late April.

Smishing scams targeting Georgia’s Peach Pass users have surged since March 1, with the FBI receiving 1,573 complaints this month compared to 1,720 over the previous 14 months. These fake texts claim unpaid tolls and trick victims into sharing sensitive information or money. Reported losses total $3,643.42, though actual victims may be higher. Residents are advised to report scams to the FBI’s IC3, verify accounts via Peach Pass’s official site, avoid clicking suspicious links, and secure personal information if compromised.
