Cobb County Election Results

Cobb County Chairwoman Lisa Cupid and District 4 Commissioner Monique Sheffield secured decisive victories in the Democratic primary, defeating their challengers.

Lisa Cupid Won with 69.45% of the vote against Shelia Edwards.

Monique Sheffield Also won convincingly but specific percentages were not provided.

In the Republican Primary, Kay Morgan ran unopposed and will face Lisa Cupid in the November general election.

In Cobb Board of Commissioners District 2, The Democratic race is headed for a runoff between Jaha Howard and Taniesha Whorton on June 18, as no candidate received over 50% of the vote.

And incumbents rule the day in Judicial Races.

Cobb Superior Court: Incumbent Julie Jacobs won against Sylvia Goldman with 68.15% of the vote.

Cobb State Court Judge, Post 7: Incumbent Carl Bowers defeated Crystal Stevens McElrath and Matt McMaster with 56.8% of the vote.

Cobb Probate Court Judge: Incumbent Kelli Wolk beat Rebecca Keaton with 59.3% of the vote.

All other judges in Cobb ran unopposed and retained their positions.

In Marietta, Juneteenth celebrations highlighted both the historical emancipation of African-American slaves and the resilience of Black culture. At Jim Miller Park, the Wild Wild West in Color Rodeo and Agriculture Expo drew thousands, featuring Black cowboys, ranchers, and farmers. Attendees enjoyed Western attire, festive food, and locally grown produce while engaging with vendors and learning about modern farming technologies. The event showcased a rodeo with line dancing, horse riding, and reenactments of famous Black cowboys like Nat Love and Stage Coach Mary, emphasizing their contributions despite historical challenges. Organizers aimed to educate attendees, particularly youth, about agriculture and Black history, ensuring Juneteenth’s legacy endures through cultural celebration and education.

Starting this fall, students will use special pouches to store their devices throughout the school day, with only staff having access to unlock them. The $100,000 initiative aims to enhance focus and reduce distractions, supported by research partnerships to evaluate its effectiveness. Concerns over implementation logistics were addressed, with assurances that disciplinary responsibilities would not burden teachers. The policy garnered broad support from community leaders and parents, emphasizing its potential to improve student concentration and overall well-being.

In a groundbreaking decision, the Marietta Board of Education has unanimously passed its 2024-25 school year budget. Valued at $159 million, this budget includes an average 5.3% raise for all teaching staff. The district's CFO, Erin Franklin, emphasized that $9 million of the $11 million budget increase directly enhances employee salaries and benefits.

Board member Angela Orange expressed her satisfaction, noting the importance of keeping up with the cost of living while maintaining one of metro Atlanta’s lowest millage rates at 17.97. Fellow board member Jaillene Hunter highlighted the prioritization of employees in this year’s budget.

In addition to supporting teachers, the budget allocates funds for Science of Reading programs, general education staff, and increased costs like insurance and maintenance. This move signifies it’s strong commitment to both educators and students in the county.

STORY 1:Woman Dead After Apparent Stabbing in Marietta Apartment 

On Sunday morning, Samantha Wollery, a 42-year-old woman, was found dead in her Marietta apartment with apparent stab wounds, according to Marietta Police Department. The incident occurred at Lakeside at Town Center on Williams Drive. Officer Chuck McPhilamy stated that the attacker was someone known to Wollery, withholding the person's identity as authorities search for the suspect. Wollery's coworkers discovered her body when they visited her apartment after she failed to show up for work. The apartment was unlocked, and evidence suggests the suspect fled the scene after the attack. Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers Greater Atlanta at 404-577-8477.

STORY 2:Mail processing in Georgia improving but delays continue 

Recently, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy updated U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff on improvements at USPS's Palmetto regional facility, stating 64.5% of first-class mail was delivered on time between May 18 and 24, up from a low of 35.8% in mid-March. Despite progress, delays persist due to past legislation and infrastructure challenges. DeJoy paused a restructuring plan, added staff to Palmetto, and adjusted transport schedules. Ossoff has advocated for resolution, noting ongoing issues for Georgia residents. DeJoy reported 85.4% of packages delivered on time as of May 31, with no delays in the June 9 primaries' mail-in ballots.

STORY 3:1 Killed, 1 Injured in Crash After Police Chase 

Early Monday morning, a car fleeing from Cobb Police crashed in a neighborhood north of Kennesaw State University, resulting in the death of the driver. The incident began when an officer attempted to stop a speeding 2013 BMW X5 on Barrett Parkway. The driver evaded the officer, prompting a pursuit that was quickly terminated due to safety concerns. The car subsequently veered off Frey Road, colliding with trees before coming to a stop in a wooded area. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by the Cobb County Medical Examiner, while a passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was hospitalized. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Cobb County Police Department STEP Unit.

A fire at the Metro Extended Stay Hotel in Marietta displaced 30 residents on Saturday morning. The fire, which started on the third floor around 10:30 a.m., affected five rooms directly, with 30 to 40 additional rooms sustaining water damage. Officials, including Capt. Steven Dau of the Marietta Fire Department, have not determined the exact cause but stated there's no evidence of criminal activity. Residents reported rumors of someone grilling indoors, but this remains unconfirmed. Emergency responders helped evacuate residents like Stevie Ray Anderson and Jim McCurry, who alerted others and witnessed the fire's rapid spread. Relief efforts coordinated by local organizations like MUST Ministries and the American Red Cross provided temporary housing and support to affected families as they navigate recovery.
