The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area saw a remarkable 3.1 million visitors in 2023, generating over $161 million for the local economy. This influx supported over 2,100 jobs and resulted in a cumulative economic benefit of $236.8 million. Park Superintendent Ann Honious highlighted the widespread impact, noting visitors come from across the nation, bolstering both U.S. and local economies.

Nationally, the National Park Service reported 325.5 million visitors who spent $26.4 billion in nearby communities, supporting over 415,000 jobs and contributing a record $55.6 billion to the U.S. economy. NPS Director Chuck Sams expressed pride in the parks' impact on visitors and their positive contributions to local economies nationwide.

Georgia Kicking Off Annual National Child Passenger Safety Week

The Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety and the Department of Public Health are teaming up to remind parents about the importance of car seat safety. National Child Passenger Safety Week runs from September 15-21, and certified technicians will be out checking car seats and raising awareness.

Studies show that car seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers. Despite this, many car seats are installed incorrectly. State law requires children under eight to use a car seat or booster based on height and weight.

Allen Poole, Director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, emphasizes that properly installed car seats can save lives. For those who can’t attend this week’s events, local fitting stations offer appointments to ensure your child's seat is safe.

Board of Regents Honors KSU Professor with Teaching Award

Kennesaw State University's Sara Evans, an associate professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice, has been honored with the Board of Regents’ Award for Excellence in Teaching. Recognized for her outstanding commitment to student growth and academic achievement, Evans is one of two recipients of the prestigious Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Award this year.

"Dr. Evans exemplifies KSU faculty's dedication to fostering student success," said Ivan Pulinkala, KSU provost. Her research covers diverse topics like crime, augmented reality, and resilient teaching methods during the COVID-19 pandemic. Evans has collaborated with about 200 students over eight years, integrating experiential learning and undergraduate research into her teaching.

"I am honored to receive this award," Evans stated. The Board of Regents’ awards, given annually, include a $5,000 faculty development grant, presented at the Board of Regents’ Scholarship Gala on Sept. 12.

The project includes 650 residential units, two commercial buildings with 175,000 square feet of space, a 10-12 story office building with 200,000 square feet of space, and 250 hotel rooms. It aims to focus on health and wellness, integrating medical and lifestyle services. The plan aligns with Smyrna’s long-term development goals and is expected to undergo review by the Atlanta Regional Commission, with city consideration anticipated in early 2025.

STORY 4:'A Day of Memory': 9/11 Honored at Marietta National Cemetery

On the 23rd anniversary of the September 11 attacks, east Cobb resident Gayle Lorio and dozens of volunteers gathered at Marietta National Cemetery to clean headstones and honor fallen veterans. With over 17,000 buried there from all U.S. wars since the Civil War, the volunteers, organized by Carry The Load and including employees from companies like Panasonic Automotive and AT&T, aimed to pay tribute and maintain the gravesites. “It’s a day of memory,” said Navy veteran Alex Smith, highlighting the significance of honoring those who sacrificed their lives.

STORY 5:Marietta Considers Downtown Branded Banners

The Marietta City Council has advanced a proposal for new branded light post banners in Marietta Square. Proposed by Brittney Gray of Visit Marietta, the banners will feature the organization's new logo, website, and tagline, “Meet me on the Square.” The rebrand aims to enhance local pride, tourism awareness, and visual cohesion. The banners, in navy blue, purple, and orange, are designed to reflect the square’s aesthetics and will be installed on 17 light poles around the Square. All costs will be covered by Visit Marietta, with the banners up through January.

On the 23rd anniversary of the September 11 attacks, east Cobb resident Gayle Lorio and dozens of volunteers gathered at Marietta National Cemetery to clean headstones and honor fallen veterans. With over 17,000 buried there from all U.S. wars since the Civil War, the volunteers, organized by Carry The Load and including employees from companies like Panasonic Automotive and AT&amp;T, aimed to pay tribute and maintain the gravesites. “It’s a day of memory,” said Navy veteran Alex Smith, highlighting the significance of honoring those who sacrificed their lives.

The Marietta City Council has advanced a proposal for new branded light post banners in Marietta Square. Proposed by Brittney Gray of Visit Marietta, the banners will feature the organization's new logo, website, and tagline, “Meet me on the Square.” The rebrand aims to enhance local pride, tourism awareness, and visual cohesion. The banners, in navy blue, purple, and orange, are designed to reflect the square’s aesthetics and will be installed on 17 light poles around the Square. All costs will be covered by Visit Marietta, with the banners up through January.
