STORY 1:Man Arrested After Bringing Gun to Kennesaw Mountain High School

An 18-year-old Kennesaw man, Theodore Davidson, was arrested at Kennesaw Mountain High School for bringing a loaded, sawed-off rifle to an event hosted there. He was apprehended on school grounds during the event, Kennesaw Mountainfest. Davidson claimed the rifle belonged to his father, who instructed him to take possession of it. Cobb Board of Education Chairman Randy Scamihorn stated Davidson was not a district-enrolled student and suggested Davidson may have had an altercation with his girlfriend. The event was not officially sanctioned by the school or district, but Scamihorn emphasized the paramount importance of safety on school campuses. Davidson faces charges including possessing a weapon on school property and is held in Cobb jail without bond.

STORY 2:Cobb DA: Man Wanted for Selling Heroin That Killed 17-Year-Old

The Cobb District Attorney’s Office issued an arrest warrant for Austin Joseph Love, accusing him of selling heroin to a 17-year-old who fatally overdosed on the drug. The incident occurred at a Waffle House on Sept. 30, 2023. Surveillance footage, Love’s provided phone number, and car registration led to his identification as the suspect. The GBI confirmed the substance as heroin and Love has not been arrested. The DA's Opioid Fatality Project aims to combat the opioid epidemic. Challenges include investigating overdose cases and law enforcement unfamiliarity. Love faces a felony charge of selling heroin.

The Supreme Court of Georgia held a hearing on the legal battle over Cobb Board of Commissioners’ electoral maps. Justices questioned both sides but didn't reveal their stance. The dispute arose when the county replaced state-drawn maps, affecting Commissioner Jerica Richardson's district. The challenge focused on the plaintiffs' standing to sue. The Attorney General's Office argued against the county's invocation of home rule powers. The court's decision is expected before mid-November, but it's unclear if it'll impact the upcoming primary election. In a recent decision by the University System of Georgia, in-state undergraduates will face a 2.5% tuition increase for the upcoming school year, marking a shift after six years of stable tuition rates across most of its 26 institutions. The Board of Trustees has also approved a 5% increase for out-of-state students, with a new tier set at 2% above this rate for international students. System Chancellor Sonny Perdue said the adjustment is attributed to inflation and aims to maintain the quality and competitiveness of Georgia's public colleges and universities. The increase translates to a $69 rise per semester for in-state students at Kennesaw State University, reaching $2,850, while out-of-state students will experience a $490 hike, totaling $10,305 per semester. The decision has elicited concern among students, particularly those without financial aid. Despite these changes, Georgia remains among the states with the lowest average tuition in the Southern Regional Education Board. Additionally, the board has revised mandatory fees for online learners and extended a waiver on test score admissions requirements for most institutions for the 2025-26 academic year, excluding the University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Georgia College & State University.

Gas prices in Georgia have surged, with residents now paying 10 cents more per gallon compared to last week and 17 cents more than last month, according to AAA. In Cobb, the average price per gallon stands at $3.47, slightly higher than the state average. Drivers across Georgia are facing a 60-cent increase compared to a year ago. This rise is attributed to factors including crude oil prices around $85 per barrel, high demand, and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Despite the increase, Georgians are still paying about 20 cents less per gallon than the national average. AAA suggests several tips for drivers to save money at the pump, including shopping around for gas prices, enrolling in fuel savings programs, and maintaining their vehicles for better fuel economy.

Barber Middle School students produced three videos for the National Poison Prevention Week video contest, aiming to educate about the dangers of poisoning and the importance of calling 1-800-222-1222 during a poison emergency. Their submission won the grand prize, marking the first time Georgia students have achieved this honor. Xenia Okonta, Sara Pilic, and Bailey Faulks were the award-winning producers, guided by their teacher Saundra Watts. They received $500 and a trip to Virginia for the awards ceremony. Watts emphasizes hands-on learning experiences to help students discover their strengths and apply classroom knowledge to real-world situations.

Although some reported seeing a sheen on the water, survey crews determined it was caused by pollen and airborne particulates accumulating on the lake's surface.
STORY 3: Gas Prices Continue to Rise in Georgia
Gas prices in Georgia have surged, with residents now paying 10 cents more per gallon compared to last week and 17 cents more than last month, according to AAA. In Cobb, the average price per gallon stands at $3.47, slightly higher than the state average. Drivers across Georgia are facing a 60-cent increase compared to a year ago. This rise is attributed to factors including crude oil prices around $85 per barrel, high demand, and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Despite the increase, Georgians are still paying about 20 cents less per gallon than the national average. AAA suggests several tips for drivers to save money at the pump, including shopping around for gas prices, enrolling in fuel savings programs, and maintaining their vehicles for better fuel economy.
