Madison’s own nonprofit, Stand Down Madison, continues its mission to uplift and support veterans facing or at risk of homelessness. Founded in honor of Vietnam veteran Wayne D. Horner, the organization’s roots stretch back to 1993 when Horner’s combat brothers vowed to ensure no veteran would be left without shelter or support. More than 30 years later, Stand Down Madison is still standing strong — and still serving those who once served us.
A Mission Born from Brotherhood
Wayne Horner dreamed of a future where no veteran would ever experience homelessness. After his passing from complications related to Agent Orange, his fellow veterans carried that dream forward. Today, Stand Down Madison operates as a vital bridge for veterans in crisis, offering connection, compassion, and real solutions. The organization’s annual Stand Down Madison event gathers dozens of local service providers to meet veterans’ needs all in one place.
The 2025 Stand Down Madison Event
This year’s Stand Down Madison event happens Saturday, October 25, 2025, from 8 AM to 1 PM at the Salvation Army, 3030 Darbo Drive in Madison. With over 60 community partners on site, veterans can access services including housing resources, job support, healthcare, food, clothing, and even free haircuts. It’s designed as a true one-stop shop for veterans seeking stability, empowerment, and community.
Last year, 79 veterans were served. This year, the goal is to reach over 100 — and that takes people power. Stand Down Madison is calling for volunteers to step up and serve as “buddies,” walking side-by-side with veterans throughout the event. Buddies guide participants from breakfast to resource tables, to clothing areas and haircuts, ensuring that every veteran feels seen, supported, and respected.
Operation Fresh Start: Calling All Barbers and Stylists
One of the most beloved parts of the Stand Down Madison event is Operation Fresh Start — a space where volunteer barbers and stylists provide free haircuts for veterans. Last year, it was a highlight for many attendees. This year, however, there’s an urgent need: only one barber is currently signed up to serve what could be 100+ veterans. The organization is seeking local barbers, stylists, and shop owners to donate a few hours of their time. Simple military-style cuts or trims can make a world of difference in confidence and dignity.
How You Can Help
There are several ways for the Madison community to support Stand Down Madison:
Volunteer: Sign up to be a buddy or help with setup on Friday, October 24. Volunteers are needed throughout the day, even for short shifts.
Donate: Warm clothing items, particularly socks, coats, and jackets in sizes 2X–5X, are in high demand.
Contribute via Amazon: Purchase directly from the Stand Down Madison Amazon Wishlist, featuring items starting as low as $6, ensuring every contribution makes an impact.
Spread the Word: Know a barber or stylist? Encourage them to join Operation Fresh Start and lend a hand.
And for volunteers—there’s a bonus! Mission BBQ will be serving food to those helping with Friday’s setup, making it a great way to give back, eat well, and connect with the community.
More Ways to Support
In addition to the October event, Stand Down Madison is hosting its second annual Meat Raffle Fundraiser on December 7, 2025, at the Elks Lodge on Jennifer Street — just in time for the Packers vs. Bears game. It’s another fun way to support local veterans and raise funds for future initiatives.
