Why does alcohol make anxiety worse, disrupt sleep, and leave you craving more? Christy Osborne is joined by William Porter, bestselling author of Alcohol Explained and Alcohol Explained 2, to explore the science of drinking and why it can keep us stuck in the very problems we're trying to escape.

What if the very thing you're reaching for to relax is actually creating the anxiety you're trying to escape?

For so many of us, alcohol has been the answer to everything. Feeling stressed? Have a glass of wine. Can't sleep? Pour another. Want to relax, socialize, or celebrate? Surely a drink will make it better.

But what if everything we've been taught to believe about alcohol is actually keeping us stuck?

In This Episode, You'll Learn:

• Why alcohol initially makes you feel relaxed but actually increases anxiety as it wears off.

• What's really happening in your brain when you drink, and why even moderate drinking can create a cycle of withdrawal and discomfort.

• Why you keep waking up at 3 a.m. after drinking and what alcohol is doing to your sleep cycles.

• The difference between alcohol-induced unconsciousness and genuinely restorative sleep, and why this matters so much for your energy and emotional well-being.

• Why developing a higher alcohol tolerance isn't something to celebrate, and how it can make moderation increasingly difficult.

• What William calls the craving spiral, and how your thoughts about drinking can steal the enjoyment from experiences you believe alcohol makes better.

• Why the pleasure you associate with drinking and socializing may have far less to do with alcohol than you think.

• How fading effect bias causes us to romanticize drinking, forget the consequences, and convince ourselves that we're missing out.

If You've Ever Thought...

"I need a glass of wine to relax after a stressful day."

"I know alcohol affects my sleep, but I just can't seem to fall asleep without it."

"I've been doing so well without drinking, but sometimes I really miss it."

...this is the episode for you.

Love Life Sober is a Christian podcast for women questioning their relationship with alcohol and sensing God might have more for them beyond the wine glass.

Have you felt that nudge from God to put down the wine glass, but the thought of relaxing, having fun, or even coping with life feels impossible without it? Are you waking up each morning vowing not to drink tonight, only to find that by five p.m., all bets are off?

Love Life Sober is for sober and sober-curious women who love Jesus, or who are longing to reconnect with Him, and who know deep down that alcohol is no longer serving them.

Hosted by Christian sobriety coach and author Christy Osborne, author of Love Life Sober: A 40 Day Alcohol Fast to Rediscover Your Joy, Improve Your Health, and Renew Your Mind, this podcast blends Scripture, neuroscience, and practical coaching to help you understand what’s happening in your brain, your nervous system, and your heart, and how lasting freedom from alcohol is actually possible.

You’ll hear expert conversations and powerful testimonies for women exploring Christian sobriety, faith-based recovery, mindful drinking, and alcohol-free living. Each episode gently invites you to step away from wine and toward deeper connection with God, without shame, pressure, or the need to decide forever.

At the heart of Love Life Sober is a simple truth. Love, joy, peace, and connection were never meant to be found in a wine bottle. They are found in Jesus.

This is a grace-filled, shame-free space for women seeking freedom from alcohol through faith, neuroscience, and compassionate coaching. You don’t have to hit rock bottom. You don’t have to white-knuckle your way through sobriety. And you don’t have to do this alone.

If you’re ready to loosen alcohol’s grip and live the life God is inviting you into, you’re in the right place.
