The primary election for Louisiana’s governor’s race is just over two weeks away, but that’s not the only race voters should be watching. The Times-Picayune / New Orleans Avdocate’s editorial director and columnist Stephanie Grace, joins us for an update on the slew of elections taking place this fall. 

New Orleans will soon have its first permanent civil rights museum . Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser announced the opening of the Louisiana Civil Rights Museum this week — which will officially open its first exhibit at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center on Oct. 8. The museum will highlight how chapters of Louisiana’s civil rights history played a larger role in the nation’s struggle for equality.

While the race for Louisiana’s governor is heating up, the head of the state is not the only thing residents will be voting on this fall. There are eight constitutional amendments that  will be  split between the Oct. 14 on and Nov. 18 ballots. 

The Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana recently released a guide to the proposed amendments. PAR President Steven Procopio breaks down the amendments and their potential impacts.

Election updates; civil rights museum coming to NOLA; constitutional amendments on La. ballots

Election day is almost here. And there is more on the ballot than candidates running for office. Voters in many municipalities are also being asked to consider ballot measures related to local governance. In the city of New Orleans, voters will examine three propositions on their ballots. 



Every election cycle, the New Orleans-based Bureau of Governmental Research takes a close look at ballot measures affecting the city and makes recommendations to voters. Executive director Rebecca Mowbray joins us today for more on the organization’s review of the Oct. ballot.

As the saltwater wedge slowly makes its way up the Mississippi River, residents across the state are preparing to deal with the possibility of salinity in their drinking water. Officials have asked Louisianans not to hoard water, but many are already doing what researchers call “panic buying.”

Nina Cleveland, an adjunct professor of emergency & security studies at Tulane University’s School of Professional Advancement, studies the factors behind panic buying. She joins us now for more on the science –  and to offer some healthy alternatives.

It’s football season, which means New Orleans’ bars are already packed on Sunday afternoons with the black and gold of the “Who Dat” nation.

While more than half of NFL players are Black – a statistic that has remained steady for years – 2023 was the first year that two Black starting quarterbacks faced off in the Super Bowl. Why did it take more than 100 years of NFL history to get there? 

That’s the subject of John Eisenberg’s new book, “Rocket Men: The Black Quarterbacks Who Revolutionized Pro Football.” The Gulf States Newsroom’s Joseph King talked with Eisenburg about the grueling journey for Black players and coaches in the league.

NOLA ballot propositions; why it’s not time to panic over bottled water; history of Black QBs

Salt water from the Gulf of Mexico has been moving inland, up the drought-stricken Mississippi River – and it’s already contaminating the drinking water supplies in some southeastern Louisiana communities. Officials say they expect the saltwater wedge to reach more drinking water supplies upriver – including Orleans, St. Bernard and Jefferson parishes – by the mid- to late October. This week, Gov. John Bel Edwards requested federal help to address the situation. 

The Coastal Desk’s Halle Parker is putting together a guide to help residents understand the threat of the saltwater wedge – and what they can do to prepare. She joins us today to answer questions that came directly from our listeners. 

In August, the Biden administration opened the first-ever wind lease sale in the Gulf of Mexico. Now, companies can bid for the rights to build giant wind turbines off the coast of southwest Louisiana and east Texas. But despite the excitement leading up to the sale, it only attracted two bidders. Experts say potential bidders might have been deterred by high costs due to inflation and rising interest rates – and by the big fact that, unlike other regions, Gulf states have made no commitment to buy clean energy.

Despite an uncertain future for the wind industry, clean energy is becoming more popular in the Gulf South in other ways, thanks to new federal funding for electric vehicle charging stations. 

Tyler Herrmann is a project manager with Louisiana Clean Fuels, a nonprofit that promotes affordable clean energy technologies for the transportation sector. He joins us today to talk about the state of the electric vehicle industry in Louisiana. 

Earlier this month, The Historic New Orleans Collection opened “The Trail They Blazed,” a traveling exhibition that tells the history of New Orleans’ Civil Rights Movement from the 1950s through the 1970s.

Eric Seiferth is a historian and curator with the Historic New Orleans Collection. He joins us to talk about the exhibit’s mission to celebrate civil rights history while creating a roadmap for future activism.
