It's too soon to tell if EFF Leader Julius Malema will end up in prison. This as leave to appeal the five year sentence for unlawfully possessing of a firearm begins in earnest. Malema's legal team has a week to submit the application for leave to appeal. The court however dismissed the application by the defence to appeal the conviction. Julius Malema has been sentenced to five years direct imprisonment for unlawful possession of a firearm and two years imprisonment for unlawful possession of ammunition. The sentences will run concurrently. Malema was found guilty of contravening firearm controls when he discharged an automatic rifle in the air during the EFF's fifth birthday celebration in Mdantsane in 2018.
