A Western Cape High Court precedent has contextualised the Islamic practice of nafakah in the application of South African law. Nafakah relates to spousal maintenance that a husband is duty bound to pay to his wife. In a case brought before the court- a Cape Town attorney was successful in her application for compensation from her ex-husband for the expenses she incurred in the maintenance of their household.
