The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment says pilchard herpesvirus (PHV) was found in dead sardines, as well as at lower levels in some apparently healthy fish. Authorities stress that the virus alone has not been confirmed as the cause of the mortalities, with environmental factors also being investigated. People are meanwhile being urged to exercise caution when eating sardines, particularly fish collected from affected areas. Co-ordinator of the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA), Desmond D'Sa elaborates...

Last week DA leader Geordin Hill-Lewis explained that councillors can do their best but are restricted unless they have the power in government to effect municipal changes. But according to the Active Citizens Coalition - councillors can do a lot more than they're actually doing. Party leader Imtiaz Syed has therefore called for a re-invigoration in candidates that stand for ward positions. He says young, educated professionals are ideal candidates to effect change at a local government level...
