By Newsbreak Executive Producer Salma Patel - Bravery, honour and justice - that's the message that the unveiling of a memorial monument of slain whistle-blower Babita Deokaran will send to society. The unveiling is set to be launched on National Women's Day at Phoenix, north of Durban. Deokaran was shot outside her home in a suspected hit on the 23rd of August 2021. It's believed that she blew the whistle on dubious payments within the Gauteng Department of Health and uncovered more suspicious transactions just days before being murdered. Deokaran's killers have been sentenced but the alleged masterminds behind the murder are yet to be arrested. Now, five years on, The Mount Edgecombe Arts and Cultural Council will pay tribute to Deokaran as a symbol of hope while encouraging others to blow the whistle on corruption.
