The fund blamed a bank technical error for the missed payments between August 2024 and February 2025. The PFA found the fund's behaviour "reprehensible". Therefore, in addition, to paying the member back payment of some R72,000 plus interest, the fund was also ordered to pay compensation to the amount of R5 000 for failing to attend to the complaint. Concern was raised by the People's Freedom Party who say this could have a negative impact on those who follow Islamic law - which prescribes for the immediate burial of a body. The department says where immediate burial is required for cultural or religious reasons and a Home Affairs office is not open or available; a notice of death form (DHA 1663) must be completed by a medical professional. This allows the burial to proceed, with formal registration done once Home Affairs offices reopen.
