By Newsbreak Senior Producer Taresh Harreeparshad - The Israel-Iran war will have far less consequences on food prices in South Africa than the Russia Ukraine war did. That's according to the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice & Dignity Group (PMEJDG). The group just released its Household Affordability Index for June 2025. It found that it was about R190 more expensive to buy a basic basket of food that it was last year. Currently a ceasefire seems to remain in place after- 12 days of conflict between Israel and Iran. PMBEJD programme coordinator Mervyn Abrahams says a lot of food was imported from Russia and Ukraine that resulted in high food prices during the conflict there. He adds that South Africa doesn't depend that heavily on the Middle East for food imports...
