By Newsbreak Producer Tracy Valaydham - Latest Department of Justice statistics reveal a concerning rise in statutory rape cases for the 2025/2026 financial year, increasing to 199 cases from 127 the previous year. The figures point to a growing challenge involving child offenders, with 22 minors reported for statutory rape and 890 implicated in rape cases. In addition, 129 reported rape cases involve victims under the age of 18. These figures come as South Africa marks Child Protection Month under the theme: "Working together in ending violence against children". Clinical Director for the Teddy Bear Foundation, Dr Shaheda Omar, says child protection should not be limited to one month, but must be prioritised 365 days a year...
