June marks one year since the establishment of the Government of National Unity- a political coalition created after no political party won an outright electoral majority for the first time since democracy. The ANC alongside the official opposition the DA formed an alliance with IFP, PA, COPE, al-Jamah and several others. What was billed as a revolution in coalition politics quickly became a debate point- as several parties in the GNU differed on key state decisions. A year later- what has the GNU achieved on the ground? We spoke to civil society organisations and political expert Angelo Fick to figure it out.
