A motion brought forward by Democratic Alliance Councillor Sharmaine Sewshanker was officially approved, mandating the eThekwini Municipality Executive Committee to investigate expanding subsistence fishing access across the city's piers. Local fisherfolk have long complained of restricted access to safe coastal infrastructure, leaving many struggling to sustain their livelihoods. Under the newly passed proposal, the council must explore new fishing zones - assessing the feasibility of reopening closed piers. Sewshanker explains what this now means for subsistence fisherman in the Durban basin...
