In the early 80’s a new breed of music came out of the punk scene in the UK. Called New Wave, it was fronted by bands like Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Human League, Devo and ABC. By 1982/83 the British Invasion was well underway and in Australia, shows like Countdown embraced it and New Wave bands became a regular on the show. There was nothing like it in Australia. We had the pub rock bands like Chisel and the experimental bands performance bands like Split Enz but we were waiting for a New Wave act to hit the scene that could match the UK invasion. In 2019, Paul Mitchell began working on an album with a bunch of musicians and then Covid hit and lockdowns happened around the world. What was a planned album turned into some collaborations, some humorous and some serious. They gained the attention of musician management guru, Ian Grant, who suggested a project to help musicians who were struggling due to lockdowns. That was the beginning of what would ultimately lead to a project put together by the makeshift band of artists that were aptly called Kindred Spirit. Several songs later, the focus was shifted to Parkinson’s Disease, from which Ian was and still is a sufferer. Dave Fishwick, became the subject of a documentary in 2012 when he decided to stick the middle finger up at the banks and start his own bank in the little town of Burnley. And what other name could he call it than the Bank of Dave. It was a David and Goliath story that nearly finished before it got started as the old established banks tried their hardest to stop it. But what makes this story even more interesting is he got some much needed help from a Little Rock band known as Def Leppard. So Dave owes just as much to the rock gods as he does to the public that supported him in making the dream happen. My guest this week is Marcella Detroit originally known as Marcy Levy, the co-writer of the 1977 Eric Clapton hit Lay Down Sally. She has sung and songwritten for Aretha Franklin, Burt Bacharach, Belinda Carlisle and a host of others. Marcy had a successful career in the duo Shakespeares Sister with ex Bananarama member Siobhan Fahey. Two Top 10 albums, Sacred Heart and Hormonally Yours and a number one single "Stay" that spent 8 weeks on the charts at number. My next guest is one of the founding members of the biggest rock band of the 80’s according to Classic Rock Magazine. Dire Straits has sold up to 120 million records, received Grammys, brit awards and MTV Awards and also helped fashion the MTV generation.  John Illsley, Bass Guitarist for Dire Straits was one of the four brothers and friends, I guess you could call them brothers in arms that decided to form a little band In 1977. They hit the UK rock scene with an album that would go on to launch the career of one of the most influential and important bands in the history of music. Originally known as Cafe Racers, the band thankfully adopted the name Dire Straits and a tour with Talking Heads and a top 10 single Sultans of Swing started their journey. Cheap Trick have been around since 1973 and saw their first debut album released in 1977. They have influenced bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins. With hits like I Want you To Want me, Dream Police, The Flame, inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016 and in 2022, Cheap Trick graced shores of the Land down under as part of the Under The Southern Stars tour. Of all the interviews I have done so far, these guys were my favourite. We literally had every member of the latest lineup of Jefferson Starship on screen and it was complete pandemonium. Everyone except drummer Donny Baldwin who was having trouble connecting. Every now and then you will hear Donny jump on and ask where we all are. It was the most fun, spontaneous and funniest interview ever. It is pure chaos. I am now grateful to say that I have interviewed the lead singer Cathy Richardson since for an upcoming episode and I am in contact with each one still. Steve Kilbey and the Church have been a staple in not just Oz Rock, but certainly impacting music around the world.
