Sade, Batoul, Lisa, and Vaish sit down with UNE alum Allira Cutmore to discuss her experiences and advice for social work students. In this conversation, Allira Cutmore, a social worker with a wealth of experience in community services, shares her journey and insights. She discusses her placements during her social work degree, including working with at-risk students in a school setting and child protection at the Department of Communities and Justice. Allira highlights the challenges she faced, such as imposter syndrome and the lack of understanding of social work in other disciplines. She also shares the positive experiences she had, including the validation of her theoretical knowledge and the importance of her lived experience as an Aboriginal woman. Allira discusses her passion for working with Aboriginal people and mental health, and the intervention strategies she finds most effective, such as cognitive behavioural therapy and narrative practice. She emphasizes the importance of building rapport and relationships with clients by starting where the client is at and being authentic and genuine.
