THE LETTER Guest REITUMETSE MTHEMBU & SIPHO MBELE
Dear Mapaseka
My wife has changed since we married in 2020. Over the past five years, she has been drinking alcohol almost daily. In the process, she has left two jobs. I have a good-paying job and have been maintaining the family since then. I pay for everything and still give her a monthly allowance. I’ve stayed hopeful that she would change and have provided a lot of support to assist her.
However, her habits are now taking a toll on my mental well-being and affecting the kids. She rarely does house chores and spends her allowance on alcohol and friends. She no longer takes care of herself, neglecting her hair, nails, and overall appearance. Both families have spoken to her; she stops drinking for a bit but eventually goes back to it.
I have reached a point where I want to leave the house. She is miserable, and I’m worried that my kids will suffer as a result. This situation is already straining my mental health and work commitments. I have considered taking the kids with me to a new place, but I’m concerned about how this might affect her. I’ve tried to help her, but I’m tired now. I need to live my life.
Regards
BEN
