THE LETTER Guest REITUMETSE MTHEMBU & MBULELO MAYIKANA
Dear Mapaseka
I married my wife, who had a daughter from her previous marriage. Her first husband passed away when she was seven months pregnant. Six years later, his family no longer contacted the child and showed no interest.
I wanted to adopt my wife’s daughter, giving her my name to create a sense of unity with our children. However, my wife refused, saying the daughters name is her only connection to her father.
This issue has become a sensitive topic in our home, leading to anger or tears whenever discussed. I feel like I'm living in the shadow of her first husbands memory, making me question if I'm truly valued. Am I unreasonable for wanting our daughter to bear my name, or is my wife creating an unnecessary barrier between our children?
