THE LETTER Guest NHLANHLO MKHIZE and BRIAN MHLANGA
Dear Mapaseka, I have a dilemma in my workspace. I recommended a friend of mine for a job that was advertised in my job of 4 years. I head up our marketing division and she had been desperate for work after being unemployed for some time and she is a single mother of 2.
She had moved back home with her children and would ask for money from me now and again. I promised to help her look for work and recommended her to my superior as a hardworking and reliable person. She was hired as a coordinator and have been in our workplace for 6months, suddenly she is always having meetings with my boss and even attended one where he had requested me to counter a presentation she had made of a project I’m leading. The insinuation was that she has some interesting ideas that I might learn from and she may possibly take a lead on.
I am so shocked as I have been friends with this person for 15 years and have never seen this side of her until we started working together. Each and everyday and in all meetings I feel as though she is setting me up for failure and turning my division against me. She sells herself as the more fun and helpful person with my subordinates and I am the strict unreasonable individual. When I asked her what is happening she pretended to be shocked and says she is working hard to not disappoint me as I have recommended her.
I feel like I am losing my mind, I no longer look forward to coming to work and I have no interest in being her friend but our families are so tied together.
