In this episode of The Life Changing Weekend, we remember the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks against America on September 11, 2001.  To discuss, we're joined by Jeff Moore, a civilian Army contractor inside the Pentagon when the hijacked airliner struck the Pentagon.  Plus, two first responders and Tom Moyer, former general manager of WAVA, discuss their memories of that tragic day.

Life Changing Weekend 09-13-26 Remembering Sept. 11, 2001

Across the country, millions of people are quietly caring for the health of a loved one, often with no training and little support. Care doesn't stop when a patient leaves the doctor's office or the hospital, it shifts into the hands of family members, who may manage medications, coordinate appointments and hold everything together, often while working full-time and raising kids of their own. Somewhere in all of that, they rarely stop to focus on their own mental or physical health.  To discuss why caregiver mental health deserves more attention and what real support can look like, we’re joined in this episode by Rawle Andrews, Jr., Esq., Executive Director, American Psychiatric Association Foundation,

Next, for many families caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease, pacing, aimless wandering and repetitive behaviors can upset an otherwise pleasant day. It’s called agitation associated dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease (AAD), and for the seven million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease, it’s one of the most common and disruptive, yet least understood, symptoms.  To discuss AAD, we’re joined by Dr. Brent Forester, chair and professor of psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine, and Karen Finocchio, a former family caregiver whose mother lived with AAD.

Life Changing Weekend 10-25-26 Caregiving & Alzheimers

More than 50 million Americans—one in every seven people—receive care through Community Health Centers, making them one of the nation's largest providers of affordable, comprehensive health care.  To discuss why Community Health Centers are serving a record number of Americans, what’s unique about the Community Health Center model, the health care challenges facing patients today, and why Community Health Centers continue to be one of the nation's most effective models for delivering affordable, high-quality health care, we’re joined by Dr. Kyu Rhee, President and CEO of the National Association of Community Health Centers.

Next, rural cancer patients are less likely to receive guideline-recommended cancer care, including chemotherapy, radiation and survivorship services. Cancer death rates are about 15% higher in rural communities, and the gap continues to widen.  The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer aims to change that with a new rural accreditation category that brings evidence-based quality standards to rural hospitals while tailoring requirements to reflect their available resources.  To discuss this further, we’re joined by Dr. Ronald Weigel from the American College of Surgeons.

Life Changing Weekend 10-17-26 Rural Healthcare

When people think of Saint Francis of Assisi, they often they think of him simply as the patron saint of animals, who lived in poverty in the early 1200s and ultimately founded the Franciscan Order, an order of brothers and friars best known today for their work in education.  The finer details of Francis’ life have been whittled down over the years but aren't lost.  He is still widely studied by historians and theologians and in this episode, we discuss a new book that offers a novelized take on Francis’ Life.  The author of the book, Charles Gaines, passed away just months before the final draft was submitted to his publisher so the book was finished by his nephew, Monte Burke, who joins us today.
