12 Top Tips to Create Your Optimal Routine

View descriptionShare

This episode focuses on the importance of optimal routines for the successful entrepreneur. The work environment of an employee typically involves regular interaction with others and is usually defined by rules, routine and set times.

As your own boss you will be able to make your own rules, if you are no longer required to work a 9 to 5 day when should you be working?

Catherine shares some great advice and tips on how to establish an optimal routine and find a balance that’s right for you as an entrepreneur.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • As your own boss, you will be able to make your own rules but there are challenges.
  • Are you working the hours you need to, to get the business up and running?
  • What hours am I working? what am I doing in those hours? keeping a work log will help you to define how your time is being used and if it is driving your business forward and bringing in an income.
  • It about achieving a balance  - working on the right areas and tasks whilst not working every hour available.
  • Create a routine that works around your circadian rhythm and facilitates you working at your optimum times.
  1. Start with a good morning routine that works for you.
  2. Do not be at the whim of others, turning off technology can ensure you start your working day when you choose.
  3. Check when your most productive times of the day are and schedule high-value income-generating tasks (IGT).
  4. If you are an early bird or night owl then use these times to get ahead and be productive when others aren’t working.
  5. Try methods such as the Pomodoro method to ensure you work with optimum productivity over longer time periods.
  6. Make sure you take regular breaks from your screen, digital downtime throughout the day is vital.
  7. Grouping similar task types together can help with the flow of productivity.
  8. Get into action early, write down the tasks for the day and organise your time to deal with the big tasks or the ones you’ve been putting off first.
  9. Record your tasks, making notes as you are working in anticipation of being able to outsource them later.
  10. Use an online sharable calendar in anticipation of working with others. Getting everything important on the calendar ensures you are getting the most from your day.
  11. Use the rock, pebbles, sand, water principle for planning, giving priority to what’s important in your life.
  12. When it is not a working day aim to switch off, reset and recharge when it is your own business it can be all-consuming but it’s vital to take time away for your mental wellbeing.
  • Find a routine and take action that’s right for you there is no such thing as time management it is all about how you manage time and make sure time is not managing you.
