Today we are unpacking a topic that affects every learner, parent, job seeker, and employer — Scarce and Critical Skills in South Africa. Our country faces specific skill shortages that have a major impact on economic growth, service delivery, and opportunities for young people. According to the Department of Higher Education and Training, understanding skills in high demand is essential for planning, training, and labour market interventions. We are joined in the studio by our guest speaker from the (name of SETA)Department, ******** who will enlighten us about today’s topic ... It’s good to have you on the show ********.

“Are you thinking about your next step after school? Did you know that TVET colleges are not just another option—they actually work with industry to offer qualifications that lead to real jobs? From choosing the right programmes based on what skills are needed locally and nationally, to giving learners practical experience in the workplace, TVET colleges are preparing students to be work-ready or even start their own business. Today, we’re talking about how these colleges bring occupational qualifications to life and what it means for young people now and in the future.”

Today, we would like to focus on an important topic: QCTO-accredited occupational qualifications, including how prospective students can verify the accreditation status of Skills Development Providers that offer occupational qualifications, part-qualifications, and skills programmes. This information is especially valuable for learners who have completed Grade 12 or are considering a technical and vocational career pathway.   We will also discuss the risks posed by bogus colleges and institutions that falsely claim to offer accredited qualifications, a challenge that continues to affect many unsuspecting students and their families in South Africa.

In this episode, we look at the Department of Higher Education and Training's "Apply Now" campaign, which helps high school learners beat the January rush and secure a place at university or college.  We explain how the application cycle works. This includes the 1 April opening dates and early deadlines for Health Sciences, as well as the specifics of calculating your Admission Point Score (APS) and preparing for the National Benchmark Tests.  Join us for practical advice on using online portals and organising your documents. This episode of the Khetha program explores the critical differences between public and private higher education institutions in South Africa, focusing on how the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) regulates both sectors to maintain quality standards. A DHET representative explains the importance of verifying institutional registration and qualification accreditation to avoid the significant financial and academic risks associated with non-accredited "fly-by-night" colleges.

Financial problems should not stop your education. This episode provides a full guide to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). We explain the rules for qualifying, the application process, and common mistakes to avoid. These mistakes include sending the wrong documents or missing deadlines. This information helps you get the funding you need for your studies.

Today we bring you another important discussion that supports your journey through the Post-School Education and Training (PSET) system.   The PSET landscape in South Africa is rich with opportunities, and the DHET’s Career Development Services (CDS) aims to empower individuals with accurate, reliable, and up-to-date information. Today’s topic focuses on I did not make it, now what?—a key area that affects many young people as they transition from school, pursue further education, or enter the world of work.   Not everyone passes Grade 12 the first time—and that can be devastating to a learner who had their sights set on pursuing post-school and education and/or employment opportunities. Today, we remind our listeners that your matric results do not define your entire future. The DHET proposes?? multiple pathways for young people who need a second chance.   We will unpack options such as rewriting subjects through the Second Chance Matric Programme, pursuing occupational qualifications at TVET colleges, or developing workplace skills that can still lead to strong careers. This episode encourages resilience, planning, and exploring alternative opportunities within the PSET system. No young person should feel stuck—there is always a next step.

The DHET recognises that moving from the structured environment of school into post-school education, training, or the world of work can be challenging for many young people. This transition requires not only academic readiness, but also emotional preparedness, life skills, and awareness of available support services. Learners must adapt to new learning environments, increased independence, and different expectations. Career Development Services play a key role in supporting this shift by providing guidance on study skills, time management, learner support services, and realistic career planning to improve access, retention, and success in PSET.

Receiving your National Senior Certificate results is just the beginning. This episode helps learners and parents decode matric pass levels and explore the various pathways available in the Post-School Education and Training (PSET) system. We also provide a step-by-step guide on using the Central Applications Clearing House (CACH) for placement support.
