Morry Frenkel speaks with Zeddy Lawrence, playwright of and performer in “Morgen Wieder Lustik”, a play about his late great-grandfather, Heinze Lewin, who perished in Auschwitz in 1942. Zeddy describes his life as a scriptwriter, radio journalist and editor (Jewish News [UK]) before coming to Australia in 2009 to take up the editor’s position at the Australian Jewish News. He provides background information on Heinze, a musical child prodigy, who composed successful German operettas and film scores that were used in Hollywood. Heinze’s story is told through Zeddy’s voice, together with music not heard for more than 80 years, played by Tomi Kalinski. “Morgen Wieder Lustik”, which roughly translates from the German to “Tomorrow Will be Cheerful Again”, is a tribute to Heinze Lewin and all the Jewish artists who were murdered during the Shoah, and touches on what is happening currently in Australia and globally to Jewish creatives. Performances of “Morgen Wieder Lustik” will take place on Sunday, November 8th, in Elsternwick, and on Wednesday, the 11th of November, in Caulfield (venue details will be provided to ticket holders prior to the performances).
