Morry Frenkel speaks with acclaimed Australian artist Tim Storrier, winner of the 2012 Archibald Prize, whose work is held by major Australian and international galleries, about the state of the arts in Australia and its impact on local Jewish creatives. Tim describes how government involvement through policies and funding negatively influence creativity and originality, so producing state-approved art that is a form of propaganda, as evidenced by many decisions of Creative Australia. Amid rising anti-Israel sentiment and antisemitism, indirect government funding of the Arts has contributed to the silencing of Jewish voices, their art’s messages, and public dissent from arts-institution leaders. Tim introduces the term, “post-aesthetic” art: work judged less by its form or design than by its political message and the identity of its creator.
