Morry Frenkel speaks with Professor Sharon Lewin AO, the inaugural Director of the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity at the University of Melbourne, about the recent breakthrough in her laboratory’s search for a cure for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), which is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Sharon talks about the status quo of AIDS treatment, which is able to keep the infection at bay only as long as anti-viral medications are maintained. She then describes the novel approach her team has taken to successfully demonstrate a method of inducing HIV to activate its ‘dormant’ state and expose infected cells to attack by the immune system.
