Morry Frenkel speaks with Gideon Heine, writer and director of the film “Wish You Long Life”, about the role stories have played in his life, from his Holocaust-survivor grandparents and childhood books to Yiddish literature. Gideon explains why telling Jewish stories matters to him, how historical and contemporary factors shaped the film’s coming-of-age themes, and what it was like working with an accomplished cast and crew on a harmonious set of Jewish and non-Jewish professionals. JIFF is holding exclusive preview screenings: in Perth (Palace Cinemas Raine Square) on Wednesday 4 November; in Sydney (Ritz Cinema, Randwick) on Sunday 22 November; and in Melbourne (Elsternwick Classic Cinema), with two sessions on Thursday 26 November. Tickets: www.jiff.com.au/films/wish-you-long-life.
