Morry Frenkel speaks with A/Prof Matteo Vergani, Associate Professor at Deakin University and the director of the Tackling Hate Lab, about the establishment of the Lab and details of its two, recently released reports: Mapping Online Anti-Jewish Hate in Australia: A Big Data Analysis, and From Shock to System: The Rise of Anti-Muslim Hate in Australia. Matteo and his collaborators have used AI interrogation of more than 2 million social media postings in Australia (mainly from the X platform; 2020-2026) to classify and sort hate messages. Anti-Jewish hate peaked immediately after October 7, 2023 and again following the Bondi massacre, the trend also found for anti-Muslim hate messages. Neither has returned to pre-October 7, 2023 levels. Matteo also describes the unexpected result from the analyses showing that sometimes more than 50% of hate is disseminated from small clusters (up to 100 users).
