The Minister of Home Affairs had previously revealed in Parliament in the year 2020 that his department was dealing with more than 800,000 blocked ID cases, involving alleged duplicates and what it claims are “fraudulent” IDs.
In response to this, Lawyers for Human Rights launched a campaign: “My ID, Unlock My Life” to raise awareness around ID blocking and they have taken Home Affairs to court over its practice of blocking IDs it thinks are in some way fraudulent
