Japan's Prime Minister stood in the White House and told Donald Trump, to his face: "I firmly believe that it is only you, Donald, who can achieve peace across the world." Then she walked down the colonnade and saw Joe Biden's official portrait.

Prime Minister Ishiba made her first visit to the White House this week, and the relationship she telegraphed with President Trump was striking on multiple levels. She delivered her opening greeting in English — struggling with the language but choosing to do it anyway, without a translator — as a deliberate signal of personal respect to both the president and the American public. European leaders speak English because they have to. She did it because she wanted to.

Later in the evening, she singled out Barron Trump by name, wished him a happy birthday, and told the president it was "very clear" where Barron got his looks — "from his parents, of course." She also committed on camera to personally rallying the international community behind Trump's efforts toward peace in the Middle East. The contrast with the media's ongoing "Trump is isolated from allies" narrative could not be more stark.

Then came the Pearl Harbor moment. Trump, explaining why he hadn't pre-warned allies about U.S. strikes in the Middle East, turned to the Prime Minister mid-press conference and asked: "Who knows better about surprise than Japan? Why didn't you tell me about Pearl Harbor?" The room laughed. Then it got quiet. Then he did the full "am I right, am I right?" to the gallery before pivoting to a straight-faced explanation of military strategy. Larry's take: funny, a little uncomfortable, and very Trump.

On her tour of the White House colonnade, PM Ishiba spotted the row of presidential portraits — Trump 45, Biden, Trump 47 — and immediately burst out laughing when she saw Biden's name above an auto-pen signature. She covered her mouth. The interpreter lost it too. She was in the White House. She knew exactly what that signature meant.
