Hawaii To Destroy The Famous Stairway To Heaven Mountain Staircase

View descriptionShare

Well, the Honolulu City Council has moved to remove the city’s famous “Stairway to Heaven” a terrifyingly steep series of 3,922 steps that winds along the spine of an Oahu mountain range and leaves hikers feeling as if they’re in the clouds. Local officials say the 70-year-old illicit attraction, which is closed to the public, currently earns hikers a $1,000 fine, is dangerous and not worth the trouble. The U.S. Navy actually built the stairs during World War II to provide access to a secret radio base. And for more on the removal of this unofficial tourist attraction, we turn to our roving correspondent, coming to us live from Honolulu.

Listen to Lamont and Tonelli Monday through Friday, 5-10am, on 107.7 The Bone in the San Francisco Bay Area.
