A wildfire is burning in Wharton State Forest at the border of Camden and Burlington counties.

New Jersey forest fire officials say so far, it’s covering 300 acres and is 40% contained in Waterford and Shamong Townships. Jackson Road is closed near Atsion Road.

Crews are doing controlled burns in strategic locations to prevent the fire from spreading.

Officials say no structures are currently threatened by the fire. 

Parts of the state forest will be closed until further notice.

Wildfire burning in Wharton State Forest is at least 40% contained

A North Jersey congressman, Donald Payne Jr, has died after suffering a heart attack earlier this month.

Governor Phil Murphy and his wife Tammy issued a statement expressing sadness over the passing of their friend.

Payne represented the 10th legislative district covering Newark and surrounding areas in Essex, Hudson and Union Counties.

Payne was elected in 2012, replacing his father Donald Payne Sr who died. Payne Sr served since 1988 and was New Jersey’s first black congressman.

Payne Jr was running unopposed in the June primary. So far there’s been no announcement on who will replace him on the ballot.

President Joe Biden on Wednesday signed into law an aid package for Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan. The legislation also includes a provision that gives TikTok's Chinese-owned parent company, ByteDance, nine months to sell the company, with a possible additional three months if a sale is in progress.
