Supreme Court rules on social media content, challenges to federal regulations, debit card swipe fees

View descriptionShare

In other key rulings today, the Supreme Court has kept a hold on efforts to limit how social media platforms can regulate content.

The justices ruled unanimously to send the cases back to lower courts.

Trade groups for Facebook, TikTok, X, and YouTube claimed new laws in Florida and Texas violated their free speech rights. Republican governors who signed the bills complained the social media companies were censoring people based on their viewpoints.

In another case, the Supreme Court opened the door to broad new challenges to federal regulations, long after they take effect.

The conservative-majority court ruled 6-3 in favor of a truck stop in North Dakota that wants to sue over a rule about debit card swipe fees that a federal appeals court upheld a decade ago.
