A salad chain is taking flak for putting beef on the menu. Sweetgreen's founder says the addition of caramelized steak comes at a time when Americans are trying to increase their protein intake. The company's also been looking for ways to pump up business at dinner time.
The problem with beef? Sweetgreen's pledge to reach carbon neutrality by 2027. Experts believe raising and slaughtering cows is a significant factor in climate change.
A company spokesperson says the beef they're using is mostly pasture-raised on farms in Australia and New Zealand that are "rooted in regenerative farming principles and gentle impact on the land."
