California lawmakers are trying to make it easier for renters with pets to find an apartment. The bill would ban blanket no-pet policies and prohibit landlords from charging extra for security deposits and rent for tenants with household pets.
Supporters say too many renters struggle to find housing because landlords won't accept pets. Some tenants have been forced to turn their pets over to overcrowded shelters. Meanwhile, property owners say they're worried about property damage and liability.
The bill is awaiting a vote by the full assembly. It then needs to go to the state Senate for approval.
