A former New Jersey police officer has been sentenced to 27 years in prison for fatally shooting one man and wounding another. This happened in 2019 during a high-speed car chase in Newark. 

The judge said there's a need to deter officers like Jovanny Crespo from having what he called a “shoot-first, ask-questions-later” mentality.

NJ.com reported the 31-year-old former officer cried and later stood to briefly apologize to the victims’ families. He and his lawyers had been asking for leniency, telling the judge that Crespo had less than two years on the job and had been poorly trained.

Former NJ cop sentenced to 27 years behind bars for deadly high-speed chase, shooting in 2019

An officer who was riding a police dirt bike was hit by a car and taken to the hospital. It happened just after 4:30 on Sunday afternoon.

Investigators say he was near Juniata Park when a woman driving a Honda CR-V made a U-turn and hit the ATV that the officer was on. He slid into a nearby parked car and was hurt, per officials. His condition hasn't been released.

Police say the dirt bike was totaled and the CR-V had minor damage.
