Closing out four days of the Democratic National Convention, Vice President Kamala Harris told voters they have a chance to chart a "new way forward."

“Our nation with this election has a precious, fleeting opportunity to move past the bitterness, cynicism, and divisive battles of the past,” Harris said, as she accepted the nomination. “A chance to chart a new way forward. Not as members of any one party or faction, but as Americans.”

Philadelphia City Council and the Police Department have been working to improve the city's 911 dispatch center following a tragic incident last summer when a dispatcher sent police to the wrong address of  a shooting victim in Kingsessing. The man was the first of five people killed in a mass shooting.

After 911 dispatch sent Philly police the wrong way last summer, city makes progress on improvements

The Philadelphia police department is getting ready for students to return to school next week. Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel says officers are paying special attention to the routes where students from rival schools might gather.

"We'll be very focused on our corridors as a result of the shootings that we had at Imhotep and others.  We'll be working effectively around our schools to make sure that we are providing a safe passage for them."

Bethel says commanders are reviewing data to ensure officers are deployed in the right place at the right time.

Yesterday, SEPTA, said it has a new unit within its police department focusing on bus and trolley safety for students.
