The IRS has a new program that will let several million Americans file their taxes online for free. The program, which is only in 12 states, lets nearly 20 million taxpayers use what amounts to a free government version of TurboTax or H&R Block.
The White House says it could save the typical taxpayer $160 in filing fees. The money for the IRS Direct File pilot program comes from the Inflation Reduction Act. As of now, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware are not participating, and the program only applies to federal tax returns.
