Divers pick through twisted metal, searching for the remains of six construction workers who plunged into the Patapsco River and perished when the cargo ship Dali plowed into Baltimore’s Key Bridge and caused its sudden collapse. Now there is word that, in the icy waters around the now flattened, mangled bridge, divers have found the bodies of two victims. Maryland Superintendent of State Police Colonel Roland Butler Jr. says they were trapped inside a pickup truck.
The others are presumed dead. But now, authorities say, divers are no longer able to safely navigate around debris and that a search and recovery will pivot again, into a salvage operation.
