Cop shoots, kills pit bull during dog attack in North Philadelphia

View descriptionShare

For the third time in as many weeks, a Philadelphia police officer shot and killed a dog.

The latest incident happened around noon on Wednesday near 16th Street and West Indiana Avenue in North Philadelphia. An officer fired multiple shots at a pit bull because it was attacking a smaller dog.

The pit bull was killed. The smaller dog also died from injuries it suffered in the attack.

The owner of one of the dogs, a 66-year-old man, was injured by a bullet fragment that ricocheted and hit his arm. He denied medical attention.

The officer is on desk duty pending an internal investigation, as is police protocol.

This is the third time this month that a Philly cop killed a dog. The other two incidents — on May 1 and 14 — involved dogs attacking people.
