St. Joseph’s Norton Thoracic Institute was the third program in the United States to perform a lifesaving double lung transplant for someone with a history of COVID-19. Sanchez, a husband and father-of-two, was transferred to St. Joseph’s for the last resort lung transplant after spending 93 days on ECMO during more than three months fighting for his life at the University of New Mexico Hospital. Sanchez, 52, is now breathing fresh air and has reunited with his family after a total of 116 days on a ventilator and 147 days hospitalized.
